Pickups in All Mahongany Guitar

Re: Pickups in All Mahongany Guitar

So, I'm back to post #3 and #4 in this thread.

Sadly we all knew exactly where this thread was going to go and who was going to be saying it as soon as Elepe made the suggestion.

Funny how the JB gets called temperamental then they all get a custom and have to mag swap it to death to get it to work... but its a much reliable pickup

To quote the Mighty Hetfield, sad but true.

A set of Jazz Models sound great in all mahogany guitars.

Re: Pickups in All Mahongany Guitar

My son has a standard strat, alder body, maple neck with a SD California 50's fitted pickguard. I built an all mahogany strat. Swapping the pickgaurd over, the tone follows the pickgaurd a with pickups, not the wood. Yes there is a difference, but not easy to pick. That said the mahogany is similar in weight and texture to the alder, Agree with darthphineas and elelpe, try them. At least if you do hear a difference you don't like you will know what to try next

If you think about trying actives, maybe the Mustaine Live Wire set.

Re: Pickups in All Mahongany Guitar

Hi guys/gals,

I currently have a Jackson SL2, alder w/ maple thru-neck and a JB in the bridge. I'm trying to find a pickup that will give me a similar sound in a Charvel SK-1 (all Mahogany, 25.5", neck thru). I love the mid thump and rounded tone from the jb, but as the Charvel is a big chunk of wood and I'm worried about the mid range turning to mush. I quite like the sound of the blackouts, however I'm not keen on the ridiculous amounts of gain.

Cheers!
I believe that the Mustaine set is modeled after the JB/Jazz set, only active, so you could dial them back a bit, and still conceivably get the tone you're after. Then still have the option of rolling forward for a big finish.

EMGX85 bridge
EMG/EMGx 81 neck

Very fast swap if you have blackouts. Weaker than the overthetop blackout bridge if thats the one you have...if yours are quickconnected, you might also try the neck<<>>bridge swap that works so well for blackouts competitor in mahogany :-)

Ah the legendary livewires...has ANYBODY tried them, like EVER? Not once in all the years have i seen it sell used, so it must either be a wellkept secret of total perfection, or such epic suckage that it actually gets returned as defective every time

I've heard a demo on youtube. These pickups have the best cleans. EVER.

Re: Pickups in All Mahongany Guitar

No harm in trying the JB in Mahogany if it isn't costing you money, but I have never found the JB to work well in Mahogany guitars. I've tried it in Les Pauls, Ibanez S470's, and PRS SE guitars, both 22 and 24 fret versions, and it has never worked well in any of those. If you exchange the A5 magnet for an A2 it does work well in those guitars. I love the regular JB in Bolt-on 25.5 inch scale alder bodied guitars with 300k volume pots.

Re: Pickups in All Mahongany Guitar

Get a Duncan distortion. It's super similar to the JB but a bit more mahogany-friendly, and with a bit more oomph, tightness, and upper mid articulation.

+1000 ^^^^

I put a DD/59n setup in my custom built mahogany Tele that has 2 humbuckers and it sounds awesome .
Not muddy at all and cuts like a knife through the mix like a JB .
