Hey fellas out there. I was wondering if anyone knew any SD pickups that sound great with a certain amp. A match if you will. I was particularly interested in Peavey classis series amps and Fender tube amps. Any opinion is appreciated.
I find certain pickups do work exceptionally well with certain amps... JB's I find to sound great with something like an XXX, and 81's go beautifully with a 5150 or Recto.
One of the guys on GP steered me to the SD surfers to go along with a cowtipper (being a dark fendery sounding 60's reproduction); sure glad I took his advice.
My general rule of thumb with a Bright amp (i.e.) SF Twin. Go with a PuP with a A2 mag. A darker amp use a A5. But like I said ...That's a generalization.
It depends on what you are looking for. But one of my generalizations is that I like to match lower-output pickups with higher-gain amps and hot pickups with vintage-toned amps. A low output pickup sounds awesome through a fuzz pedal and a low gain amp.
If you want the classic Fender sound, you may want to get some vintage Singles... like the SSL1s or Surfers... that said... the Vintage style Buckers usually also sound good in all environments. I'm not so much of a fan of high output pickups (save for the HR in my neck for that extra solo blast :headbang because they seem to limit me in tone variety and openness and I don't need a high output bucker to sound heavy, the '59 through my TSL will do that as good if not better.
