So . . . nobody plays them with their index finger rather than their thumb, eh? Dammit . . . it's so much easier the way I've been doing it.
its also easier to do it with certain pickups more than others. I noticed I can just pinch them out with a Duncan Distortion no problem better than with other pups.
You can extend your index to hit the octave harmonics. Pretty damn difficult to do perfectly.

omg... I still don't get why we don't have people tone chasing after that instead of EVH all the freaking time.
You are on the right track. Just keep trying unplugged till you have them %100. remember the harmonic nodes, their positions on the neck . mirror those points on the bridge side, and pick on that exact point. Each string has 3- 4 points where the harmonics jump out, with different notes. Exactly like on the neck!
Since the guitar is not a true temperament instrument, you need to bend the notes to the sweet spot if the note is a fingered one.
and when you have mastered this, you will understand the power of the
DOBERMAN PINSCH HARMONICS!
I find you have to dig in to get 'em. All of a suddent, things will click and you'll be doing them all the time. Lord knows I overuse them...not quite at a Zakk level but man do I like 'em!
