Pinch Harmonics

Re: Pinch Harmonics

Took me a little while to get the technique down but now I can make em scream. Really adds a whole new flavor to any style.

Re: Pinch Harmonics

So . . . nobody plays them with their index finger rather than their thumb, eh? Dammit . . . it's so much easier the way I've been doing it.

You can extend your index to hit the octave harmonics. Pretty damn difficult to do perfectly.

That little harmonic passage actually just blew my mind.

Holy **** that's awesome . . . not what I'm doing at all, but very very awesome!

Re: Pinch Harmonics

You are on the right track. Just keep trying unplugged till you have them %100. remember the harmonic nodes, their positions on the neck . mirror those points on the bridge side, and pick on that exact point. Each string has 3- 4 points where the harmonics jump out, with different notes. Exactly like on the neck!
Since the guitar is not a true temperament instrument, you need to bend the notes to the sweet spot if the note is a fingered one.

and when you have mastered this, you will understand the power of the

I find you have to dig in to get 'em. All of a suddent, things will click and you'll be doing them all the time. Lord knows I overuse them...not quite at a Zakk level but man do I like 'em!

Once I learned how to do it, I have to keep myself FROM doing it, or I start sounding ridiculous. As long as I don't do it with overexaggerated vibrato, I won't sound like Zakk... :P

Re: Pinch Harmonics

you can also hit different frequencies in a note, depending on where you hit the string with your thumb.

here's an example from the pinch meister:

*The main riff is all about hitting different harmonics on F# (i believe he's tuned to Eb) on the bottom string. He is pinching different areas on the string using one note.

Also, vibratos/bends help pinches sound a lot "wylder".

hope this helps.
