PJ Marx?

Anyone know anything about this company? Back in the 80's, I know a few big players used them (at least the Night Ranger guitarists Jeff Watson and Brad Gillis), yet there is virtually no information about them online. Their pickups even seem to have escaped the hands of Harmony Central reviewers?

So, anyone know anything about the company? Do they still exist? I did a search on Google, and found virtually nothing.

Re: PJ Marx?

i remember playing a few of them in germany back in the mid 90's. they were nice guitars but i dont know much else about them

Re: PJ Marx?

Brad Gillis told me that they kicked "major booty"... Go figure.

Re: PJ Marx?

Just a little bump, so a few more people that may know something gets a chance to see this.

Re: PJ Marx?

I remember the ads but nothing else. Were they active or passive? IIRC I remember the pickup being held in hand by Jeff Watson and it looked quite a bit deeper than a covered Jackson pickup, which this reminded me of.

Re: PJ Marx?

Great question! If I could find one, I'd totally retool a strat in homage to Brad Gillis. I was out looking for those a few months ago and found jack (that's nothing, not a reference to blades, the bass player). I don't think they were active, but illis had a boost hooked up which was battery operated.

Hi guys!

I think I can answer a number of questions for you. PJ did make some great pickups and I used to be an endorser. In addition to his own branded pickups he did OEM for Schon Guitars, which is how I met him. Great guy, and yes, the pickups were very hot. I never saw any that were active and I did see the "deep" pickups that were mentioned in this thread. They were covered humbuckers, and the one on my Schon is covered, but definitely not active. PJ was working with pickup master Bill Lawrence who along with Seymour and Larry is one of the founders of the pickup replacement market. Bill invented the "bar" humbucker as I recall and all my PJs are so equipped. Hope that helps!

Best,

Hey Bro! Welcome.

Do you still have any of the PJ pickups or guitars with them?
Pics would be cool, i've never seen any PJ Marx pickups.

Re: PJ Marx?

I've known him for 30 years. Great guy. He made both Passive and active pickups.
He's a flat out genius. He's moved on to other things now but I hope to do an interview with him for a Guitar Blog I plan on starting. We'll see...time will tell. :-)

Re: PJ Marx?

I had two 412's or 812's I don't remember which. I still have one that reads 18K I haven't found a place for yet.

Re: PJ Marx?

Wow, I never thought this thread would resurface! In fact I couln't remember having asked about it until I saw it again. I did buy a Watson humbucker once, but I've had some problem with the wiring on it, so it's never been put in a guitar. I probably should try to get it to work some day.

Yes! Welcome aboard, Mr. Doppler...and, please, feel free to post more often than once every 6 years.

PM me if you need the wiring info for the Jeff Watson P/U. :naughty:
