Re: Planet Waves lifetime guarantee...

monster cable is all about the advertising. they tell you that they are the best and they are the most expensive so you automatically believe this is true. their price raises some questions when 1. the components in a cable are CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP, even the 'best', and 2. they are made in the same factory in china as most of the other cables on the market.

Re: Planet Waves lifetime guarantee...

I dno't automatically believe any marketing BS, i've opened it up myself. I'm not some n00b who has used 1 cable in their lifetime, i know my **** thank you.

Re: Planet Waves lifetime guarantee...

Getting stepped on is a hell of alot of beating? lol

It is when you use the cable 7 hours per day & the person stepping on them (accidently i must add. Lol) is almost 14 stone.

The PW cable couldn't even take regular use/abuse let alone constantly being stepped on.

Re: Planet Waves lifetime guarantee...

A guarantee or warranty doesn't pertain to anything involving materials or quality.

Matter of fact, the inverse is likely the case.

A very well made cable doesn't need that sort of thing. And most folks, when a cable busts, they just chuck it or end up putting it aside and forgetting it, even if it is a Monster. The majority likely never come back to Monster, and it's not because of the quality of materials or construction.

I don't know any players (personally) who can afford to chuck away cables all the time.

The better quality materials and construction = longer it should last. Of course there will always be exceptions to the rule, but that should be the general equation.

Most folks are fine with any run-of-the-mill cable.

Most folks YOU know are happy with run of the mill cables.

None of the "abuses" you've claimed to have put your cables through are all that stressful or remarkable. They're what I would expect ANY cable I would purchase to be able to sustain without damage.

Yeat i've had 3 PW cables which have broke without abuse so you're agreeing with me- they are poor cables.

Re: Planet Waves lifetime guarantee...

i dont care what the cable is made of or what the components are to be honest. Ive had 2 monster cables....they broke. I have now have my whole board wired up with planet waves and use them for longer cables too. Im not gonna say they sound better than monster...cause i honestly dont know. But they sure as hell sound good to my ears and they havent broken once.

All that matters to me.

If you're going through THAT many cables then you're doing something wrong.

The other end of this would be that maybe perhaps you shouldn't be spending such an inordinate amount of cash on something as trivial as a cable when you can't afford to replace it.

I agree.

However with most of the "premium" cables you're just paying for the warranty and their advertising.

Monster cables aren't good because they're good. They're good because of the warranty. At best they're an average cable. You're not going to get to breaking even on your investment until you go through and kill three of them and get replacements.

Most folks YOU know are happy with run of the mill cables.

Yes....those of us that play out and record and do something with our gear and capabilities rather than try and hear the sonic differential of a tit mouses fart at 200 yards out between two cables running through a dozen stomp boxes and into a high-gain amp.

Yeat i've had 3 PW cables which have broke without abuse so you're agreeing with me- they are poor cables.

The ones that I had worked fine and sustained more abuse than the dog falling asleep on them.

Seriously? You're really constituting your dog falling asleep on them or putting them on the bottom of a shipping box as "abuse?"

Well i wasn't being totally truthful sayign i accidentally damaged it somehow.. it was the impact when i threw my guitar across the stage that did it... Just didn't want xssive to see my post and wince at the thought of his old guitar being thrown around. For what it's worth this cable has lasted really well considering what its been though these years (and i'm not jsut talking about being stepped on haha), but from the sounds of you guys i just got lucky and got one that held itself together.

I'm not for or against any set sort of cable, but this planet waves one has lasted me well thus far, so i'll get the replacement and see how that goes.

Re: Planet Waves lifetime guarantee...

Ah i now see that was directed more at rivera than me.

For what it's worth most people i know (including me) dont particuarly care much about cables, as long as it works then thats cool. If there was a cable on the market that would never break and its only drawback was tone, it would have to be a big tone loss for me not to buy it.

Re: Planet Waves lifetime guarantee...

btw, cable markup in stores is around 70-90% depending on the cable manufacturer and the store. Having worked with both music and audio/visual stuff.

Re: Planet Waves lifetime guarantee...

All I can say if your damaging cables all the time is that its time to invest in a wireless system. It will pay for itself in no time.

if you the type that wants to jump around all over and do other things that would result in possible cable damage as well, you should be using a wireless anyways because aside from the repair/replacement issues, its a PITA having to get untangled from your bandmates, accidently unplug your guitar midsong etc.

Be some of the best money you've spent

Re: Planet Waves lifetime guarantee...

So how do i get my broken cable replaced? It's a good 3 years old and so i don't have the box or reciept anymore, can i get it at any place that stocks Planet Waves cables? Or do i contact Planet Waves themselves? Can i just take it in and walk out with a new one? Or will they tell me without a reciept i have no chance?

I accidentally somehow bent the end of it at the last gig, didn't realise till last band practice but now it cuts out now and then, will they tell me as it's bent is must be down to improper use?

Cheers guys.

Every time mine has broken down (three times) I just took it back to the store I bought it at and they fixed it the first two times and altogether replaced it the third (in exchange for my broken one), and I never had the box or receipt with me, though the store I took it to I'm known at, so that might've contributed to the ease of repair/replacement.

Re: Planet Waves lifetime guarantee...

I guess I am one of those few that buys a good length of raw cable and a bunch of ends. I just cut and re-solder when needed, which isn't too often.

Were few and far between....

Re: Planet Waves lifetime guarantee...

I stepped on my cable once...

I just replaced all of my George L's with Core X2 http://www.coreoneproduct.com/pages/corex2web/DIYGK20.html Much more "guitar friendly" to my ears in the top end than George L's, which tend to be a little glassy around 4-6kHz. There'll be an eBay garage sale soon for all of my George L's connectors! I even ended up using the Core X2 from my Metric Halo audio interface into my Tannoy actives in the studio...beautiful.

Cheers................................wahwah

Re: Planet Waves lifetime guarantee...

I now use the Sound Control (Guitar Centre of the UK) own-brand cables, and they have lasted longer than any of the Planet Waves ones I had. I even step on them from time to time! But seriously, I can swing the guitar round by these cables and they still work perfectly. I haven't had a single cable problem in my rig for 18 moths since swapping out the PW ones. There is no way I would spend all that silly money on a "high end" cable that is made out of the same stuff. Copper, insulator, rubber and neutrik ends. Hardly revolutionary.
