Todd, I'm not trying to pick on you, but why do you seem so surprised at the idea of trying something before you buy it?

It was a test of punctuation. Used periods and got no responses. Changed it to a question and...o my goodness. It was a test on the effect that changing the punctuation would have on the post.

Here it is okay, I violated the try before you buy rule when I bought my JV strat online. I have very nice guitar that I bought before I played it. Maybe I got lucky. I guess I need to get out and play a bunch of amps. I do find it a bit hard to believe that there could be that much diff between different examples of the same amp. But, I believe you guys. I simply do have the experience that you guys have. Unfortunately I don't live in a large metro area to do this.

That does make it kinda challenging, doesn't it? I guess that sometimes, you have to make a leap of faith, but it's always best to play through more than one if you can.

Re: Play Through More than One

well, this thread's really helpin' me sell my amp.

Re: Play Through More than One

FWIW, I will definitely play through the amp I want before before I buy it. It only makes sense to be sure that you are getting the sound you want. Ultimately, tone is determined more by the amp than the guitar right?

Except for any foamy amp, I meant to say. If he's owned it, you know it has to be good. You also know that he's done all kinds of unspeakable things in its presence, so that should be worth a little extra, too.

:D If my amp could only speak,....the stories it'd tell,...the trouble i'd be in.

For the sake of arguement: You apply this even to Bogner, Komet, Dr. Z, Fargen? You would never try one these before buying?

The more expensive the gear, the more critical I become. Generally, you're not worried about build quality with a high end amp, but when large amounts of cash go down, it's best to be certain you actually like the tone.

I try as much of everything I can play through. For example I tried a new Fender Custom Vibrolux Reverb the other day, and compared to my one, it was very different sounding, even taking into account the fresh speakers.

I face a similar thing by proxy of being in a foriegn country. Major brand stuff can be found, but unusual stuff can involve punting blind with an overseas dealer...
