yeah but i don't like the sound of those amps being cranked TOO loud, but i like it at just under half power

so 15-20 watts + 25-30 watts = 40-60 watts, which will be more than enough power. Plus i'm guessing that the speakers on the deville will take a lot longer to get that treble bite I get with the deluxe when its at like 5 or so, cuz of the higher wattage & extra speaker, which is good

I seem to remember my Deville being around 50-60 watts. It was FREAKING LOUD!

Not quite. It isn't wholly cumalative in that sense.

You know how they measure eathquakes (Richter scale)? It's kinda like that. Two 2.0's do not equal a 4.0.

Look around online. There's alot more to it.

MKF, you were playing the lower power Tweed Twin. About 50 watts I believe. That's an awesome amp. You can put in two rectifier tubes in it or run with just one of them if you want more sag. Very cool amp. You could build one for less than half that much though. I'm sure Bruce at Mission Amps coudl modify his 6L6 offering to up the trannies and get you that kind of power.

drew, you cannot get good tone on almost any tube amp (unless its SS) with the volume on 1.5. That said, the fender twin is a magical gigging amp. It's not meant to be played at ultra low volumes with a pedal, rather it's meant to be played at higher volumes where the 4 power tubes won't really distort, but with the help of a pedal, deliver wonderful tones for any genre.

One thing about Fender. I was at GC a few weeks back and I played one of their hand wired re-issues. Pretty sure it was 57 Twin reissue. It didn't have reverb and it didn't need it. http://www.fender.com/products/show.php?partno=8140500#

It was about $1,800 and had 2 12 inch speakers with 4 inputs. They don't have it at all the GC's. Anyway it was crowded and I had it on 4 and was jamming away. I thought it sounded sweet and wasn't concerned about the volume being to loud. It's only on 4.

But after 10 minutes they asked me to turn it down. The guy said he could hear it across a very large store and couldn't hear people on the phone. It didn't sound loud to me but he said it cuts right through because everybody in the store is trying to play heavily distorted low chugging stuff and that fender cuts right through. I'd love to have that amp.

Much of what you experienced is down to the type of circuit. Tweed fenders are the warmest of the vintage fenders, with a fat yet very musical midrange. Blackface circuits tend to sound more scooped through the mids in general.

If, indeed, it IS all about the live tone, then do yourself a favour and try those amps at volumes above 1.5.

There's something very 'harmony central' about forming opinions about amps by trying them at those volumes. You can do better.

so what volume do you reccomend? I assume they don't just get bassier & bassier until the tubes & speaker od & then get even MORE bassy

also, will the higher volumes voice the pedal differently? prolly a stupid question, but I'm not sure how the preamp on this differs from the hot rods, minus the presence control

Try the gear at your gigging volume. Simple as that. Ask for a seperate room if you can.

My twin has heaps of bass. Even before I retubed it, the thing had good bottom end. Then I threw in a couple of kt66hps and it became a warmth monster. I'd pull out half the power tubes in a 100w twin so you can drive them a bit more (makes it a 60w amp). I can out bass just about anything short of a bass amp with my twin now.

Use your deluxe as a yardstick. Note your volume settings, and replicate them on a deluxe at the shop. Then try the other gear relative to that volume. Simple.

Yeah. It was a hand wired 57 re-issue. I guess Fender might not exporting them. So whoever has one overseas can jack up the price. Still a great amp if you can affort the extra premium on an already expensive amp.

The guy at guitar center said the only reason he had one is because he sold four to a Japanese tourist on a special order. So Guitar Center management sent him another one to sell. I'll bet that guy is taking them back to Japan to mark up and sell. By the way their on this site for $2,099 US.

Not sure if they ship internationally. If I remember correctly, the one in the strore was $1,800.

well, its not that simple

see, my deluxe isn't getting good tones at gigging volume
but i play with it (with the band) when the volume's at like 5 or so, but the knobs go to 12 and it's 40 watts

yet the twin knobs go to 10, and it's 100 watts, so it's hard to mirror the volume setting
