Played a Marshall Vintage Modern

I had to stop by GC last evening to pick up a box and while looking around, noticed they have a Vintage Modern full stack in, 100 watts. SWEET! Now, what guitar to play through it? Checked out some of the Strats and immediately picked up a SRV model when I saw it. It's got Texas Specials in it so what the heck. Closest I'll get to any of my guitars anyway.

Ok, so, the amp. Where do I start....it's purple..lol (pretty cool actually), has a neat power indicator (purple), and is so simply laid out it's crazy. There's a High/Low switch on the front (dynamic levels) and a Mid Boost (real nice). The Body control does what it says, fills it out with the lows and low/mids. The Detail control does what it says, upper mids and treble frequencies. They REALLY do work together. The tip in the handbook to set the EQ knobs to noon and tweak from there is no joke. That was the first thing I did before powering it up. It took some fiddling but I was able to get some really sweet tones in both the High and Low modes. Everything from James Gang to Maiden was within reach. The reverb is nice. There's more available than past reverb-loaded Marshalls to my ears, about 3-4 on the dial is where I set it. Just enough to get the effect.

Now, I've heard some say it's bright. Well, DUH!, old Marshalls are bright by nature. That's the "VINTAGE" part of it..lol. The "Modern" part is definitely modern, that being the new technology implored in to the amp with the High/Low dynamics switch and the Body and Detail controls. Too much "body" made it flub a little but that could've been the guitar too, dunno, I didn't play a humbucker equipped guitar to find out. Had to leave before getting my ass in trouble..lol.

Overall, it's everything I expected it to be. I knew what not to expect going in just reading about it, and knowing Marshalls. If someone goes in thinking they're going to sound like the new mega-heavy-ultra-uber-distortion-crunch-from-hell band, they'll be disappointed. This amp is for pure rockers, raw and rude. In addition, you HAVE to use the guitar volume with it to get all the dynamics. It practically forces you to do so.

I REALLY like it. Gimme a 50 watter and I'll be happy. :o)

EDIT: Almost forgot, it doesn't help my amp GAS any.

i tried it out when i was buying my new les paul std..
and i like how bright it sounds
lots of body with sustain....
vm plus neck les paul pickup..oh my god
my dad was like, "is that note still ringing?"
sounded great with my cm plexitone too
i can barely remember the control layout but i can remember the tone..
great raw sound with some gain..but i was missing something from the cleans..
how loud did you set the amp?

Re: Played a Marshall Vintage Modern

While I was getting acclimated with the body and detail controls, I had the master at around 2. When the guy said, "Don't be afraid to turn it up, bro.", I put it up around 3-4. My arm hairs raised up and I got goosebumps. It's a very lively amp. I got cleans no problem just by rolling back the guitar volume and adjusting my pick attack. That is must with it to get nice cleans. Dig in and it bites right back.

That's cool. I've been intrigued by them. I don't need 50 watts or a friggin halfstack, but it's a cool idea nonetheless.

Re: Played a Marshall Vintage Modern

I really wanted it when I first read about it, but after I played through it a little I decided to go in another direction. Nice amp though I liked it too!

There's nothing modern or new there:

High/Low dynamics: instead of having separate hi/low input, they now have a single input and use a switch.

Body/Detail: This is Normal and Bright channels on a plexi. Instead of having channels with separate inputs, they are internally jumpered. You can do the same thing to a plexi by moving a wire or two.

Right, that is true. But it's still new to that type of amp from Marshall. It is a modern reproduction of a vintage voiced amp, or amps from them because you can really dial in a nice range of sounds. The "norma" and "bright" channels on the old 4-input amps didn't behave quite like the Body and Detail controls. Close, but not quite.

Glad to be of service, bro. LOL Did you get the cab too?

For the record, the speakers in the VM cabs are the same ones used in the Jimi Hendrix Tribute stack.

Is it foot switchable?

I didn't get the matching cab. I've got a green back loaded 4x12 at home and then another cab with the vintage 30/G12h30 combo. I thought that a new cab might be overkill!!!

I can't wait to get it home and plug my Ibanez PGM into it and see what she's made of!!

You're golden then. I loved what I heard out of the matching cab. If I was to get a 50 watt head, I'd be getting a 2x12 cab, or I'd just get the 50 watt combo.

Re: Played a Marshall Vintage Modern

You can play the hell out of it! The bill won't even cross your mind when you're deafening yourself. :)

Re: Played a Marshall Vintage Modern

I really really want the 50 watt combo! Cheers Erik, you GAS inducing swine, you!!

Re: Played a Marshall Vintage Modern

I need to spend some more time with this amp. I only played a few settings. I'm in love with the one at the store in town.

Re: Played a Marshall Vintage Modern

Hey, Stevie, you're very welcome. Support the home economy and buy one...LOL.

Smilemon, definitely sit with it a while. When you play it again, set all the EQ knobs to the noon position and adjust from there. Start with the Body and Detail at noon too and adjust them a little at a time. Push the Master up there too, if they'll let you. ;)
