Played some amps today..Peavey Classic/DB owners I have a ? too

Let it B
Tested several amps today in my haphazard quest for a new amp.

Rivera 25 Watt pubster: 1x10.

Good cleans, Good mid gain crunch, had plenty of high gain, but got really muddy at high gain. It was an immediate "no thanx"

Rivera 45 Watt Clubster 1x12

EL34s Definitely better than the 25 watters 6v6s but still had some mud/definition probs at high gain.

I was very disappointed in these two for the cost and the fact they are Riveras. Well built, great mid gain crunch and clean, but high gain just has very poor definition.

Peavey XXL 2x12 combo (100 watts I think, solid state Transtube technology)

Whoah. Talk about GAIN. No way I'd ever need the amount of gain this puppy has. The Crunch channel all the way up was more than I'd ever need. Clean sound was decent, but nothing special. It's a bit thin and "transistory" at the highest gain settings, but fairly tube-like and a bit fatter with gain backed off to 6-7. Good clarity even at high gain, and easy to get feedback and pinch harmonics. Classic Marshall gain level sounds a bit difficult to dial in without sounding thin. Good newer generation metal amp, but a little too over the top for my 80's sensibilities :D

Peavey Delta Blues (?) El-84 Tube combo. 30 watts w 2x10" speakers.

I wasn't interested in this amp at all, but the guy at the shop said I should try it for the $. It had blue tolex..could be an older model? Anyhoo. What a surprise! :D What a beautifully responsive to touch amp. I was surprised at the amount of gain as well with the boost on. For rhythms it was perfect;a good early EVH amount of gain, but I'd prolly use a SD1 for a lead boost. The cleans/dirt were excellent too. This is not just a "blues amp", but definitely a classic rock amp as well. The ONLY thing that would keep me from buying this amp is when the boost was engaged it had absolutely no presence!??? Even w/ the treble dimed it sounded like someone had rolled the treble/presence (if it had one)control all the way off, or it was turned around backwards. Otherwise, I'd be buying it or the classic 30 (which seems like the same thing). Is this normal for these amps? Not real versatile, but great sounds and response to the player.

Peavey Bandit II 112 Transtube 80 watts. 1x12 combo

After playing the muffled Delta Blues, this thing sounded like a razor. But after a few minutes I really started to like it. No, not nearly as warm or responsive as the DB, but a good variety of sounds, and sounded better to me than the Riveras or XXL. The cleans were passable. The Vintage lead was my fave. The modern/high gain voicings were not quite as insane as the XXL but approaching that level. I think the high gain voicing with some tweaking could give a really good compressed shred tone. A really cool feature was the variable Speaker dampening which gave it a closed back cab type sound with more low end, or a more open back cab sound. And the variable power control (forgot the name) was a cool tweak to play with for "sweetness"

I still wanna play some more amps/brands, but I'm really impressed with the Peavey offerings of today tube or transtube..a far cry from what they used to be.

But I would like to ask if the Peavey classic/delta blues owners noticed this lack of high frequencies? 'cos if that was just a fluke, I think it would be a hard amp to beat for the price. With increased highs and a TS-9 or SD-1 goosing it for leads it would be just about perfect for me, sound and power-wise.

Re: Played some amps today..Peavey Classic/DB owners I have a ? too

Well from what ive seen, these amps usually come with a "NORMAL" and "BRIGHT" input. So i suppose if u dont see the Bright input in the Peavey Classic 30, which i dont recall seeing when i sat down and played one for about an hour at a local guitar shope, the it would be on the upper models. Say Classic 50 or watever they are called.

Yea, i honostly dont recall a bright input in the Classic 30, but I kno there is one in the upper models. Maybe that would solve youre problem, getting a higher model?

I think one those 30s or Deltas would sound fine if you added a pedal like a TS-9... YOu should try it and see what happens! The SD-1 is the volume booster, am i rite? I dont kno muc about that sorry.

Classic was a lovely amp, all models. I grabbed a strat and had a most excellent blues session on a Classic the other day! I am very much considerin one. The only thing was the lack of extra gain, which can be assisted with a pedal.

Look into a Classic 2x10 which has more punch and also a Bright input.

hope that helped a bit

Re: Played some amps today..Peavey Classic/DB owners I have a ? too

Thanks Stevie. Def no bright channel on the DB. I'm trying to find a classic to play through.

I played some more stuff today...the Marshall MG100DFX combo again, a Marshall AVT100, a MG30 watt combo, another Peavey Bandit II, a Fender Cyber Champ, and a Behringer V-tone 10 watter.

I'm thoroughly convinced that Marshall should stick with all-tube designs. The MG has a smooth gain and was fairly tube-like, but the sound was nasally and thin...no low end, no projection...even with a closed back. The Valvestate was..ehh..too.The Bandit II crushed both of them for tube-like and overall tone as well as low end (and the Bandit has a open back). And I really HATE saying that because I've ALWAYS been a Marshall guy :( I don't think the language filter here on the boards will like what I have to say about the MG30, so I'll refrain :vomit:

CyberChamp had some cool sounds and was fun to play, but just sounded fake...digital, I guess.

The little Behringer CRANKED. I was surprised at the low end (cab simulators) and volume. It sounded really good for a modeller, better than the Fender IMO..possibly because it's analog. Best small practice amp I've ever heard. It was a bit noisy though...hum.

The search continues, but right now the Bandit II is in the lead (no pun intended :D) by far if I stay with a low end price amp.

I made myself stay away from the Boogies . I knew that if I played one, I'd be sick 'cos I can't afford them :D

Bandit? i may of played one of those a year ago. I was impressed! Its solid state, right? Nice tones for a crazy price. It was really small Bandit too. Peavey has some nice stuff out in my opinion.

The MG not having enuf low end? you might be right, i actually havent compared it in a while. I have the MG100DFX... There is plenty of distortion. It doesnt sound harsh, but i really have a problem in clarity. Its REALLY NOISY at most volumes with the OD2 engaged. OD1 has very little sustain. Clean is average at most. Classic Gain is too overdriven. Clean is difficult to attain at high volumes (too quiet).

Very messy sounding. I played it thru a 1960 A cab once, its sounded ok, but very messy with a loose flabby lowend. The Emulater switch is must... Why it is optional is crazy to me----u always need it engaged for the best sound. All the extra noise and interferance is a pain the booty. Yea, maybe not enough low end---in regards to tone. I think *i really havent payed much attention so dont get me wrong--- that it almost sounds like the bass is disconnected from the rest of the tone--it lacks any tightness, and it doesnt flow with the other frequencies. It sounds mismatched *regardless of most settings*

keep searchin... have u tried any Traynors? The upper Peaveys *Classic 50s*? hope u get wat u want!
