Bruce is playing drums with us this weekend and he brought a new Mission Aurora over for me to check out. This one is a 30 watt one 12" speaker amp with 6L6 tubes for the output stage. It has tube reverb and includes the gain boost foot switch to give solos a little more tube overdrive without radically changing the tone of the amp.
It's cool! He left it with me and I'll bring it to the gig on Saturday as well as check it out over the next few days.
Originally he made this amp with KT66 tubes which I liked but since I never had an amp with KT66's I couldn't quite get used to them. I wanted to hear something more familiar like 6L6's...so Bruce made one that way.
It was interesting comparing it to my 20 watt '66 Deluxe Reverb. The Mission has a G12H30 clone speaker in it and my Deluxe Reverb has a real Celestion G12H30.
The Mission seems to be a lot louder. And the 6L6's seem to give it a clearer, more sparkley tone than the KT66 version had. It now sounds a little more open in the mids and more tweed Fendery to me...more like my tweed '51 Super which also has a pair of 6L6 tubes.
I can't wait to hear the Mission on the gig this weekend where I can turn it up a little and really wail through it. I loved demoing it at the Dallas Guitar show, and Buddy Whittington came by our booth and sat in for a while and played through the Mission Aurora too.
One of the best guitarists in Colorado, Micheal Reese, will be sitting in with us Saturday and I'm going to be sure to ask Micheal to plug into the Mission Aurora so I can hear it given a good work out.
One thing is sure: Bruce has successfully combined elements of Fender, Marshall and Vox tone all in one great sounding amp...and the real tube overdrive foot switch that's part of the amp works beautifully. Gives solos a volume boost and increases overdrive and adds a nice thick bark and more texture to the midrange. That's when I hear the Voxy thing kick in: when I use the foot switch.
More later...
