Please can someone help me find a wiring diagram for 2 humbuckers?

Hello, I'm brand new to the forum, and a bit of a novice at wiring up pickups. I have a guitar with 2 humbuckers, 1 Volume pot, 1 Tone pot and a 5 way super switch. I want to have position 1 - Bridge Humbucker, position 2 -Inner coil of Bridge Humbucker, position 3 - Inner coil of both Humbuckers, position 4 - Inner coil of Neck Humbucker, position 5 - Neck Humbucker... can anyone PLEASE help me find a wiring diagram with that switch that will do that? I can't find any in the wiring diagram section of this website. I can find one with position 3 for both humbuckers, but not both inner coils. Thanks!!!

You're right, there aren't any diagrams like that on the Duncan Wiring Diagrams page. I am pretty sure guitarelectronics.com has diagrams like that, though - check there

Mattvg,

And if you can't find one that matches what you're looking for, let me know. I'm good at creating custom diagrams, and I'll just create one for you.

Hey Jack_TriPpEr, I couldn't find that specific one on guitarelectronics.com. I did find this one on the Duncan site, which I think is what I want except position 3 is both humbuckers:

https://www.seymourduncan.com/images/wiring-diagrams/2H_S5W_1V_1T.jpg

Do you know how I can modify this to get both inner coils for position 3? Would I just add a little jumper to the terminal directly to the left of the red/white wires of the neck pickup, and add a little jumper to the terminal directly to the right of the red/white wires of the bridge pickup? Thus... making position 3 both inner coils?

If I'm way off (which is very likely) let me know... and yeah, if you could create a custom diagram for me that would be a tone of help!

MattVG,

That diagram doesn't yield inner coils in BOTH positions 2 and 4. What it DOES yield, is Inner Coil in Position 2, BUT *Outer* Coil in Position 4. So there will be some additional mods beyond just what we need to do in Position 3. So we need to break this down a little bit. First, please tell me what Brand and Model of pickups you have, and if either is a Reverse Wound / Reverse Polarity (RWRP) version of that pickup.

Hey Jack_TriPpEr

The Neck is a Dimarzio Liquifire and the Bridge is a Dimarzio Super 3. I don't think either one is reverse wound/reverse polarity.

Ok, thanks for the info on your two pickups.

*if* you want your Position 3 to be hum-canceling, you need one of those 2 Inner coils to be opposite magnetic polarity from the other. Normal two humbucker layout has the two inner coils being the same magnetic polarity (north). There's two ways to change that: first (and the easiest) is to rotate one of the two pickups in its pickup mounting ring so its South coil is now the Inner coil. And then design the wiring so when the splits happen, it is those 2 inner coils that are left active. The only downside is potentially an aesthetic impact, and thats only if the two coils on the pickup look different from each other. The more different the two coils look, the more potential that the pickup looks like its facing backwards. That may not even be something that bothers you. Its a personal preference thing. The 2nd way - and requires more effort - is to flip the magnet over in one of the pickups, which requires partially disassembling that pickup (unwrapping the cloth tape around the two bobbins to get at the magnet). I personally prefer the low risk of option 1. But a lot of members here have done it succesfully, and there are plenty of videos on youtube that show how to do it. If you learn to do it, you will then be able to do neat customizations like replacing the magnet in a pickup with a different kind of magnet (e.g. from ceramic to Alinco 5). Which is the main reason members on this forum learn how to get at the magnet.

And of course, if you don't care about having position 3 being hum-canceling, then we don't need to do either of the steps above. Other than design the wiring correctly so its the two inner coils that get split. You're going to have some degree of 60 cycle hum present in positions 2 and 4 anyways due to a lone coil being active in those positions.

Let me know how you want to proceed and then we can goto the next step.

Wow, that is some GREAT information! Thank you so much. I much prefer option 1 where I flip one of the pickups 180 degrees. They are both identical as far as appearance, so that is the easiest option. I am fine with a bit of 60 Hz hum in positions 2 and 4... and to be honest, if there is some in position 3, no biggie.

So, ok... after flipping the bridge pickup, where do I go from here?

I'll just mod one of the diagrama to do what you need. Not sure yet whether it'll be one of the GuitarElectronics.com ones or the Seymour Duncan one you posted previously. I should be able to get it done by tomorrow night and have it posted here.

MattVG,

Here you go. I used the Seymour Duncan diagram as my baseline. So you will need to convert the pickup wire color codes to Dimarzio's. I am also attaching a conversion chart for that.

Thank you so much!!! This is perfect. I'll make sure and remember the red is the hot wire on the Dimarzio and not the black wire like on Duncans.Thank You!!!

Jack_TriPpEr,

I got it all wired up last night and it sounds great! Thank you so much for your help. I definitely learned quite a bit about pickup wiring, thanks to you.

Thanks Jack. Once you've had a heart attack, even a little one, it only takes the smallest amount of chest pain to send you running off to the ER. But it was something else.
