Please help me design custom HB set

Pups will be going into a 2014 Gibson Les Paul Traditional.

I'm thinking either 59B/Jazz B or Jazz B/59B for the neck. Will have smooth Alnico IV. I like the tone of the Jazz a little better, but am afraid if Jazz B is the screw coil, that it would be too boomy.

For the bridge I'm thinking either Alnico II Pro Slash B/Custom 5 or Custom 5/Distortion. Will have roughcast unoriented Alnico V. I really like the tone of the Distortion, but I'll be running into a boosted Peavey 5150 combo and a Budda Superdrive and BF Champ and am afraid if Distortion is the screw or hex coil, it may be too middy.

The music that I play ranges from hard rock to groove and symphonic metal.

Re: Please help me design custom HB set

If you use the screw coils of the Jazz and Distortion, you can adjust the screws to tweak the response.

Re: Please help me design custom HB set

'59's can be bassy in the neck slot of LP's (not a rare complaint). A4's are a cure for that.

Re: Please help me design custom HB set

Thank you Dr Newcenstein and blueman for your answers.

Will the Custom 5/Distortion with 43/44 awg pair with a 42awg neck pup? The output doesn't need to be identical because I have seperate volume controls.

If I use the screw coil from the Distortion, will it be too dominant?

Re: Please help me design custom HB set

Why not just wait for the other 59/Custom Hybrid & then pair those up?

Did you see me mention 59/Custom anywhere? Because I'm not interested, that's why. It's like if I asked for advice on spec'inc out a corvette and you told me to wait for the camaro.

I'd go with a Custom with an A8 magnet in the bridge (it's huge but can be tamed more easily compared to ceramic, cleans are very nice) and the screw coil of a 59N teamed with a Full Shred coil for the neck.

Being able to adjust each pole in the neck pup is extremely advantageous.

For The Record,it's Screw/Slug on the Dist...

Hope that was constructive.

It was constructive and thanks. I was aware. I just wasn't clear. If I were to go the /Distortion route, I'd either put hex poles or short screws. This will be a custom shop pup.

I've given it a lot of thought already and I've decided not to go with A8. I've done Custom 8 and Super Distortion 8 previously.

I'm thinking an A2P/C5 with an UOA5 would be pretty nice.

I think so too. I just can't decide what would sound better or pair better with the more PAFish neck pup, the A2P/C5 or C5/Dist.

Definitely an A2P/C5, especially with an UOA5. It's a much better match.

Thank you again blueman.

Please tell me if you agree with the recipe (screw/slug):

Jazz B/59N with smooth Alnico IV or UOA5 and either short or long screws for the neck.

Custom 5/Alnico II Pro Slash bridge with short screws and roughcastUOA5 for the bridge.

What do you think? (I tune to C#)

I wouldn't use such a hot coil in the neck slot. A JB coil is 8K, while a '59B is around 4.2. That's a huge difference. I like to keep the combined total resistance of a neck PU in the 8K's; 9 to 10K would be on the hot side, and I'd use it in the bridge slot instead. Of course, this is coming from a guy that doesn't play metal.

Re: Please help me design custom HB set

I thought the Jazz B is 3.96 and the 59N is 3.72 for a combined 7.68. When you combine the two types of wire and the slight difference in d.c. resistance, I figured it would sound great.

My mistake. I saw the capital letters and thought JB (I have got to get new glasses). You're right, a Jazz neck and a '59 bridge would make a nice neck hybrid, especially with a warmer, less bassy mag, like an A4 or UOA5.

No problem blueman. Thanks again. I think we almost have the recipe here. It's time to reach out to MJ and get these bad boys made.
