Im starting a new pop punk band and I dont know wheater to play bass or guitar. Im good at both but its really hard for me to choose. I like Mike Dirnt/Mark hoppus style bass playing and Tom Delonge style guitar playing. I can play most blink 182 riffs on guitar and bass. WHichever your guys' opinion is im getting a new instrument, here are my choices.

Guitar:

Fender- Tom Delonge sig

Shecter- Omen 6, S-1

Epiphone- Dot Studio 335

Gibson- Melody Maker

Bass:

Fender- Mike Dirnt Sig.

Please help me choose between guitar and bass. If its any help my friend cant play fast riffs like i can.

Re: Please help me.....

I'd pick guitar in a heartbeat over bass. I played bass for about 6 months, then seen how far I can go and how boring it was to prastice, nearly droped the whole thing altogethor. Then I got a guitar and haven't looked back since.

Re: Please help me.....

It doesn't really matter in this case. Most pop punk bands have the bass and guitar doing THE EXACT SAME THING.

Well i would go with a standard Fat Strat rather then a Tom Delonge Sig, it gives more tonal versitility juz incase u stop playing pop punk and decide to play something more techinical and I suppose the Fat Strat would do pop punk well... well.. most guitars can do that anyway

Re: Please help me.....

I'd go with a tele

reason being

TD sig has an invader bridge, the hot rails for tele sounds like an invader but, eh, better IMO

say you decide to not play pop punk anymore & go to...doesn't matter, any other genre, and the tele can handle it. Besides, seeing someone with a TD sig in a band that's not pop punk, is just...funny

there was a metal band in town & one of the guitarists used one that was his...2nd guitar he ever owned i believe, people NEVER stopped giving him crap about it

Re: Please help me.....

I'd take up guitar too if i were you. I find it to be a more fullfilling instrument to play.

+1 on getting a Fat Strat too. They are a good axe to have for pretty much everything.

Re: Please help me.....

man, you guys are saying the bass dont go very far. Go listen to some Flea or Les Claypool. Tell me the bass dont go far then.

For the price of any of those guitars, and the bass, you could buy a MIM standard strat/tele and a MIM standard P-bass, and still have money left over to retro-fit pickups in both, and set them up to be great players.

Re: Please help me.....

Honestly considering your taste in music I'd go for bass as none of those guitar players offer anything to "aspire" to IMO. I think you could have more fun with and feel less confined by the bass.

And I'd seriously consider something other than signature guitars and basses. Especially that DeLonge Strat which is little more than a special effects guitar.

Re: Please help me.....

Obviously you need to make the choice, but if you want a pragmatic answer to your plight, I would say go for the bass.
If somewhere down the line you would like to make a career out of music, there seems to be more oportunities for a good bass player than a guitarist. If you can read music, you can make a living playing bass.
Good luck and may music bring you joy in your life.

c'mon. This is a fun loving, and helpful community here. We dont need folks making fun of what styles other folks play. I've yet to see anyone bash you because of your musical style. Not to mention pop-punk has it's rewards. I suggest you check out some of Biu's stuff here on the board. He plays popish music in some of it, and he's quite the talented musician.

Re: Please help me.....

The only reason Im thinking about the dirnt is because his name isnt on it, i like the tele headstiock, the pickups are great, and its different looking.

Re: Please help me.....

rewards for pop punk? really?

my suggestion is also to get a bass and the mike dirnt sig isnt a bad one. its a 55 style p bass with a split p pup. cool stuff
bass players are always more in demand

Re: Please help me.....

The girls really seem to dig pop-punk alot more than country, blues, metal, and stuff like that. Dunno why. I'd consider that a reward.

Re: Please help me.....

And to add something to what Jeremy said, if you wanna be really in demand. Become a very talented drummer with a good attitude. The music industry will thank you.

We all started somewhere....

Re: Please help me.....

The new Tom Delonge model Stratocaster will be made at Fender's state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. US MSRP is $699.99.

An MIM strat with 1 pictup and 1 tone knob with all low end features. And its $700.

You could get an MiM Fat strat, put an invader in the bridge and have 10x the guitar that is. For about $400-$500.
I've never seen such a ripoff of a guitar.

My Tele > Tom Delonge model Stratocaster

We can't tell you what to do. And quite frankly, you shouldn't even have to ask.

Listen to the most inspiring of musicians on both sides. Think about what you want to do sonically.

Re: Please help me.....

If all that inspires you is blink 182 style stuff, guitar is most likely not what you want. I'd suggest bass, I just figured you wanted to aspire to someone like steve vai or something, aspiring to tom delonge isn't alot to aspire to, within a year you will be blowing him out of the water and completely bored.

Be original, do techinical punk. Create your own genre.
Music is ment to be original, not a group of copy cats.

Re: Please help me.....

People really should stop moaning about the TD's lack of versatility, its not designed for that, and if you ever do want to play something different dropping in a new pickguard and pups is so easy. As for what other people think about seeing someone playing that guitar, well i can't really comment on that, because i really could not care less about what people think of what i look like or play. However saying this, sig models are always gonna come with an extra few dollars on the price tag, so if on a budget its probably best to have a good look round.

Do take on board what these guys say about bassists being far more in demand though, being a half decent bassist is pretty much a free ticket into a band.

Play all the guitars and bass's you can and go with your heart, and once you've chosen it, never give a damn about what others say about it, because thats much cooler than caring about whose name is written on the headstock.

Re: Please help me.....

Dude, $700 for an striped down MiM strat. Im saving the guy some money. I could see $360 like the rest of the MiM stuff, bit not $700.

For $260 ill take my squier in and have an invader installed, then mail it to him if he wants a tom delonge sound. Ohh and I can also write "Tom Delonge Signature" on the headstock for an extra $400.
