PLEASE HELP! SH-6 set too bright and hardly any bass!

Hey guys, my first ever try at new pickups was last week. I loaded my Jackson JS30RR with a Duncan Distortion Mayhem set. Alder body and maple neck. 500k Volume and 250k Tone Pot. Tone pot has a .022 cap in it.

Anyhow, its just way too bright and there isnt any bass! I know this pickup is bright and middy, but I'm sure theres something not right in my current setup because the bass is just non-existent!

Should I change the volume pot value? Should I change the capacitor to .047uf?

I play melodic heavy stuff (Think Hopesfall and Deftones) and I really need my bass back!

I really need your help guys, because I love the clarity of the SH-6 and I really dont want to switch back to the muddy stock pickups.

Re: PLEASE HELP! SH-6 set too bright and hardly any bass!

Pull the cap off.

I've got a distortion in every one of my guitars and not a single one is too bright or lacking any kind of bass.

Re: PLEASE HELP! SH-6 set too bright and hardly any bass!

Its wired wrong. Go back...check..then re-check...then re-check again. Make sure you have the red/white together and taped off. Green/plain wire grounded. Black to 3 way switch. All pots grounded and to each other...and everything else grounded to them as well.

Re: PLEASE HELP! SH-6 set too bright and hardly any bass!

It sounds to me like you have a bad ground somewhere. If everything *looks* right, then heat up your soldering iron one more time and hit every joint again. Sometimes you can't see a bad joint.

Re: PLEASE HELP! SH-6 set too bright and hardly any bass!

It sounded like that in my SZ520 as well. If all the wiring checks out and you still don't like it, exchange it for a Custom or maybe an Invader....

Re: PLEASE HELP! SH-6 set too bright and hardly any bass!

There's definitely something wired wrong. A common mistake, when replacing pickups, is to swap the new for the old, wire for wire, color for color. But all pups are not color-coded the same. So, for example, if you ended up with black to ground, white and green together, and red to hot, the pups would be out-of-phase, and sound just like you described. There's at least three other color combo's that will do the same.

Make sure you have the pups wired according to the diagrams that came with them. Green and bare to ground, red and white together and taped off, black to hot, (the switch).

Hey please tell me how this turns out... im in the process of getting one of these bad boys. I would like to know if it is wired wrong or if that is just how the pickup is :D Keep us posted!

Re: PLEASE HELP! SH-6 set too bright and hardly any bass!

thanks you guys! i really appreciate the help! i'll be opening up my axe later on when i get home from work and checking the wiring again.

ill tell you how it goes!

Re: PLEASE HELP! SH-6 set too bright and hardly any bass!

right on dude... i am thinking about installing my own, but i really have no idea what im doing, and it doesent seem like the wiring diagram matches up with my guitar so... god **** spin a split knobs!

Re: PLEASE HELP! SH-6 set too bright and hardly any bass!

I would like to know if it is wired wrong or if that is just how the pickup is.

I have a Distortion, and my favorite guitar to play at my friends house is his dual-Distortion Schecter Omen 6. "Too bright and no bass" is the exact opposite of a Distortion. ;)

Re: PLEASE HELP! SH-6 set too bright and hardly any bass!

Alder, Maple & superstrat with a distortion is going to be bright...

But there really should be some bass...check wires.

Re: PLEASE HELP! SH-6 set too bright and hardly any bass!

ok the wiring was ok. its coz it was done by a professional guitar tech.

what i DID do was change the tone capacitors value from .022 to .039....

and it worked!!! the insane brightness was tamed and the bass and low mids came through.

now I'll see what happens when I put in a .047 cap!!!

thanks for all the advice guys, I did check and recheck the wiring with the tech and all was well. I did some research on capacitor values and decided to experiment a bit with those instead of experimenting with a 250k volume pot.

problem solved! chugs like a beast now! thanks thanks again!

:headbang:

Re: PLEASE HELP! SH-6 set too bright and hardly any bass!

Remove the cap and see what happens.

Re: PLEASE HELP! SH-6 set too bright and hardly any bass!

right on, keep us posted especially if you remove the cap completely... i wanna know what you think about it.

Re: PLEASE HELP! SH-6 set too bright and hardly any bass!

Thats odd. Changing the tone cap from a .022 to a .039 would have a subtle affect on the treble, and no affect on the bass. But, if it sounds good now, thats all that matters.

Exactly what I was thinking. Maybe the power of suggestion at work here? LOL!

Re: PLEASE HELP! SH-6 set too bright and hardly any bass!

I wire all my SH6's with NO caps.

Its an easy test for you to try...... bet you'll like it!

Re: PLEASE HELP! SH-6 set too bright and hardly any bass!

Maybe you hit a bad solder connection when changing the cap and now it's fixed.
