Please identify old SD pickups

Hi,

I have some SD Strat pickups that I've had for decades. I can't find them on any of the info pages. They are white solid covers, no pole pieces or blade / rails visible. But there is a blade under the covers. The covers have the SD logo on them.

Anybody know what these are?

Thanks,

What wires do they have? Is there a red wire? They sound like they could be actives.

Welcome to the forum!

Please post several pics from a few angles and we might be able to sort this out.

Re: Please identify old SD pickups

Solid white covers with a SD logo sound weird, but whatever...POST PICS!

Re: Please identify old SD pickups

Yeah, they look kind of different. I'll post some pics in a little while. Thanks for the responses.

Edit: Well it looks like the "insert image" function isn't working so I'll have to figure something else out.

There are red, white, and green wires on bottom of pickups.

Best,

'Insert Image' works if you d/l the photos to your hard drive first, and upload them. I haven't been able to just enter a URL there for quite awhile.
Or use an image hosting service and just post links.

I could not get it to work even when I downloaded to hd. The upload button does not work and every photo you "add" replaces the previous one.

You have to do one at a time.

Re: Please identify old SD pickups

It won't even allow me to upload one file. Well, I got it to work a little. Looks like there has to be text.IMG_0910 2.jpg

O.K., that's all it will do. Maybe someone can tell from that pic.?

Pretty sure that the one with the '2N-M' sticker is a STK-S2N Hot Stack for Strat wound by Martha Cameron. I've seen red ones with closed covers like that, but not white.

No the other pick up is the exact same. All three of them have those white covers. I have some hot stacks or had some on another guitar, and those don’t have covers over the rails. Unless they changed them, and these are just really early ones or something.

yep, the should be very rare. Never seen white ones before. Depending on the label they should be made between mid 80ies to mid 90ies. When were the stacks introduced?

I don't know exactly when they were introduced, but I've seen a picture of Kirk Hammett using them in his Fernandes Strat taken in either late '83 or early '84 (before switching to EMGs).

They did change (at least cosmetically) and these are very early ones. I'm more familiar with the Tele Hot Stacks, and the red-covered version of that is a totally different pickup. The red version used a ceramic magnet vs. the current A5 and the wind may have been different too. Tone-wise the red Tele Hot Stack is brighter and more scooped than the current version; contrary to a lot of the online opinion I've seen, I prefer the current one.

Does anyone know if the Strat Hot Stack went through similar changes or if they only changed the cover design?

Re: Please identify old SD pickups

These are actually really cool pickups. They sound more 'stratty' than something like an SSL-6, to me.

I had some hot stacks on a Fullerton 57 Strat reissue. Sounded great. They looked a little bit different, I think. The blade was like more polished or something. They didn’t have covers over the blades either.

But of course what I want to know is: can I sell these pups for some exorbitant amount of money on eBay because they’re old, and rare, and all that stuff, and, if so, just how exorbitant? : )
