well i went to my drummers house, one of my first REAL chances to crank the bassman, and well, i was getting HORRIBLE articulation

the only thing you could hear is well, lots of buzzing, i don't think it was too loud cuz, well, pretty standard volume for playing with drums

I tried rolling back the distortion on my pedal, messing with EQ, rolling back the volume knob, and that helped a little, but well, not enough

if it helps this was with the '59 loaded basswood tele, a 2x12 open back cab with eminence legend 125's (75w each) and the master volume bassman 50

so was it just the room? it's not a huge room, enough for drums, bass & guitar but thats about it

and if not, how can i get more articulation? I really hope its not the amp/cab

Depends on alot of things i guess but what does the bassman sound like at home when just practicing by yourself? And how does your practicing room at home compare dimensions wise to this place you had a jam in? Sounds like you tone aint cutting above the drummer how muchs mids do you have in your sound? Cause i know 59's arnt especially middy and basswood is quite flat across its frequencies and i havnt had any experience with those eminences speakers.

On another note what do you think about that eminence red white and blues you have? Ive decided that im gonna go eminence in the quads im soon gonna buy and i havnt heard anything bout that particular speaker though it interests me since eminence call the it the american cousin to the governor.

well at home it sounds fine but then I'm playing at like...well, half volume, if that

it doesn't have a mid knob so im guessing it was set pretty straight across

and '59s are actually just a LITTLE scooped in the mids

my room is a little smaller & has a lot more crap in it, i'm guessing the practice room is about...12 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 7 ft high, with carpet

mic it, if not try this. i found my blackfaced super reverb sound great at reasonable levels but when i get with my band next to a drummer and a jcm900 halfstack its hard to get the cleans cranking while sounding articulate. I solve this problem since we dont have a pa by turning the cleans as high as possible without sounding like muddy crap, then running my pedal board into it with a large variety of distortion and overdrive pedals set fairly loud.

and the rw&b is a good speaker, umm, gotta be LOUD to sound good, tons of bottom & mids, a little lacking in the highs

A room with alot of hard surfaces can cause a bad sound in all honesty im no expert in the matter though yeh mids is very important for guitars when it comes to cutting through in a band situation that could be ur problem perhaps a pickup change could help?

alot of times home settings are not gonna work with the band......you might just need to set it a couple different ways and play at the right volume.....and then see what works best....

Correct though it sounds like hes already messed around quite a bit without much luck. Keep experimenting thought and if it dont work out perhaps a change of pickups or speakers could help. I know youve probably heard me rave on about this but the Dimarzio Breed pickups are excellent medium output pickups with a great deal of mids WITHOUT it being like an ice pick the neck version im told sounds very similar to a 59 but handles gain better and cuts through in a band situation due to the extra mids it has.

well i have an EQ pedal that i didn't bring along

but im not sure that more mids would be the answer, boosted mids seem to make the sound more buzzy, and as of now, well, that's the problem

the basswood migh be part of the problem though

maybe something with more clarity like...mahogany would help, yes? no?

The buzzyness might have been from noise on his power line, perhaps flourescent lights were on?

open back is a little more open sounding, but it sounds more spaced out throughout the room......closed would make it tighter sounding and more projectional....... im not sure either of those are really the problem

I agree, in my experience (which isn't that much!) a room with all hard surfaces makes any rig sound like crap. I found it takes a hell of a lot more tweaking to get a good sound.

Is there carpeted floors at your drummers house, is there stuff in the room, or is it a bare room with hard floors?

and im thinking closing the back may help

i'm guessing that i'm having to crank it more cuz the sound is sort of...everywhere, and there may be some phase cancellation as a result

plus its a rock group & traditionally rock groups used closed back cabs, i suppose i wasn't quite sure up until now

plus closing off the back will tighten up the sound more & allow for more prescision in EQing

i sort of see what you're talking about. Sometimes it's difficult to coax certain sounds out of a single channel amp using just effects. I had a rough time with my bandmaster trying to set it right to cut through the mix but not sound buzzy or nasty.

The problem for me-too much gain, not enough smoothed out highs. What genre you playing/how much gain are you using?
