PNGD

Let it B
Probably New Guitar Day...I have a few days to mull this one over to see if it lives up.

After 2 years of being stay at home dad with my little girl, and alot of frustration trying to find some decent work, I finally landed something good, with great potential down the road. So I treated myself to this, I am sure my wife will understand, right? :gulp: Better to ask for forgiveness than permission, right? :cough: So yeah, this could potentially be my last EVER new guitar day :smash: look for my ads in the trading post in the coming days to help pay for it, should I decide to keep it !!! :D

2014 Classic, Vintage Burst. Super57 (VERY cool, not a renamed 57+) and 57C

Re: PNGD

:baby:

That's sweet, Bro. Same color as my bud's Trad Pro that I want so bad.

Re: PNGD

I have been playing it for about 4 hours today.

Pros: really good wood. Sounds big bad and clear. Nice sustain. Super57 is very cool.

Cons: 60s neck. Nicer than most 60s necks but I feel the CTS *****ing. 57 not doing it for me in the neck in this guitar...bland, and not singing. 15db boost is neat, but its easier to hit up a pedal. And finally, it is not as comfy as the big 335s are for me.

Bridge tone is righteous tbough.

Re: PNGD

I love that guitar. Thought about getting one myself in that same color.

Walk me through your step by step thought process as you bought it without getting wifey pre-approval. Do you hope she doesn't notice it when you get home? Do you show it to her? Do you brag about what a great deal you got? How do you pull it off? I need some tips!

Re: PNGD

Lol. Lemmee see how things turn out before I start handing out advice ;) I may end up needing Bloodrose's couch.

In general as long as other stuff moves out the door, and I make sure she knows things are selling, I do not get too much grief. Its when things start to pile up that its a problem.

At any rate, not even sure if this will stay. I hafta give the neck a few more days play time to see.

Re: PNGD

Cool thing about the top is that the flame is almost unseeable straight on, it looks like a plaintop for the most part. Its when you take those angle shots the flame shows up.

Some details/observations

This model has the undercut binding, and the fret ends are immaculate

All new gibbys are getting the full PLEK treatment, even the Melody Maker. Nice fret tops too here

Nut is white graphite

I am having a a tough time finding any finish flaws. Binding, paint, etc..all extremely good

Tone pros tuners supa smooth

Nice dark piece of rosewood

Boost runs on a 9v, and supposedly a trim pot on the inside to adjust from 0 to 15db. If battery dies, signal still goes through if the switch is in the off position. Boost is like a clean boost. Neat but I can see removing it , drilling the hole out and putting in a second tone down the road if I keep it.

Cleartones sounded like garbage AFAIC, but nice feel like regular strings. Gibson is using all 9-46 this year..kinda odd.

Action was sky high, but with plek nut cut I was able to get it pretty low. Neck angle is done well. I think with a pro setup and nutwork I could probably get the tailpiece close to decked. With a top wrap,.defintely could deck it.

Notched speed knobs are strange, but certainly do work well.

Re: PNGD

That's a great looking guitar Jeff, but I wish they had done the boost as a push/pull pot and kept the second tone control :yell:

Make sure you love that neck if you are going to keep it. I think the only reason my Classic gets less playtime than my Standard is that I find the 50s neck so much more comfortable, even though I have small hands and can stretch further on the 60s neck.

I'm with you on the forgiveness vs. permission thing. At least there is some hope of begging forgiveness :D. (I am thinking of picking up a used VM 2266 to replace my DSL 50 but obviously I would need to A/B them for a while.... uh oh.....)

Re: PNGD

At least with 'forgiveness' you have the guitar. If you get it after being told 'no', things would be much worse.

Re: PNGD

Congrats all around!

Now, take that damm boost out of there, put a knob in, and replace the neck with a PG.

Rock on!

Re: PNGD

Did some tweaking this morning. How the guitar rests on my body, which helped a bunch with the break angle of my wrist and made playing it pretty comfy. After playing the big bodies for so long it feels weird, but thats to be expected. My strat feels super weird when I pick it up too. Will give it some more time.

Yesterday I replaced the subpar cleartones with a set of Slinky 9-46. I did not like the bouncy feel of the cleartones or slinkies but the tone improved. Today I went up to some Dean Markley Nickelsteel 10-46, and a big improvement in feel and tone. Now the 57 in the neck sounds full instead of plinky..I think I would prefer a BB1 there, but it is better than before. Super57 sounds better too. Despite the increase in tension on the plains, the guitar just plays better.

In time the boost will definitely go If I keep it. I will put a mojotone or rs kit in it and regular speeds.

Re: PNGD

Also forgot to mention- No hammered string saddles. These look pre-cut from whomever is making the bridges for them. Very nice, no burrs or misalignment of the string slot in the saddle.

Re: PNGD

Damn, dude. That last pic is the shizzle. One sexy guitar. Name it after your wife and tell her because it feels so awesome and is a thing of sheer beauty....LOL.

Re: PNGD

Yeah. You know her better than that.

She and the little one are off to grammy's house today at some point. Hope to get a clip going.

Re: PNGD

Nice Classic! Maybe Gibson has been doing this for a decade, but when did they stop with the green trapezoid inlays? Anyhow, it looks great. Congrats on the job and the guitar and kudos to you for being a good father :fing2:
