POD Farm Plug-In

I may have asked this before .........

Is anyone using POD Farm plug-in without using Line 6 hardware? I'm trying to determine if it is possible audition the tones and tweak parameters etc. before recording or is it all just trial and error?

I use it via iLok - that's the only option besides running an XT or something attached to the PC.

It is possible to tweak/audition tones, you just have to have to monitor the channel the plugin is on.

I'm sorry. I don't understand. I have the iLok and I am monitoring the input .... but the monitoring seems to be pre POD.

It's Reaper .... but I got it worked out now. I had to disable recording on the selectewd teack, too. What DAW are you using?

Now I just have to find some decent tones. I just bought the budget (not Platinum) version of POD Farm. At least now I can play "loud" at night!

Ah good call, sounds like it worked out. I use Cubase.

The stock models have some good tones. I use mostly platinum based stuff these days, but I survived for a looong time on the stock Recto simulation.

Platinum is more essential if you're looking for really modern tones. You'll definitely do okay with the standard version though if you don't have that requirement

Bingo.

The stock tones actually cover a pretty broad range of classic amp styles. You have a couple Fender cleans that take stomp boxes pretty well and allow you to build some good tones. The J-800 does a killer Marshall sound. The Orange, Recto, Vox and Soldano are all capable and have their uses too. A tube screamer paired with any of those models should get you pretty far.

My biggest issue seems to be finding the right amount of distortion. I've noticed what may feel good for playing usually sounds like crap recorded. But if I cut back on distortion it may not "feel" right while playing but provides a much better recording.

Wouldnt that be where using the vst plugin shines?
Record a clean track, but crank the gain in the vst and monitor that. Now while you are playing it has enough gain to "feel" right.
Then, back the gain off in the recording, since all of this is happening in the vst, and the track is actually clean.

Yes, you are right. What you describe is exactly the point of being able to do that and it works well. I've realized I'm not much of a tweaker though. I prefer to find a tone and just stick with it rather than exploring and fiddling with endless settings.

Well, at my earliest opportunity I'm going to experiment with a mix of VST and outboard effects.

Right now I'm just happy to have the POD Farm plug-in working after two nights of arduously sorting through registering licenses, activating this and that, iLok dangles and dongles. The instructions were about to drive me crazy.

Give a try to Native Instruments Guitar Rig 4 as well. I am using both POD Farm and this one. So far i was able to get all the sounds i was looking for.

GR 4 Essential or Pro?

When funds permit I can upgrade to POD Farm Platinum for $199 list. This list for GR 4 Pro is exactly the same.

To be honest, I don't want too many options right now. My plate is full trying to get a better grasp of the DAW and I get bored/frustrated with tweaking.

The best tone I've ever been able to record so far was produced running outboard analog effects > POD X3 > Interface. I'm hoping to get similar results substituting the (budget) POD Farm plug-in in place of the X3. If the results are unsatisfactory using POD Farm standard, and then if the upgrade to Platinum doesn't satisfy me, I will save for one of the Axe FX systems like Tor uses.

I have the PRO but if you like to keep it simple you better upgrade your POD farm.

I use POD X3 all the time for recording too. But sometime I like record dry and put the effects later on using POD farm

I bought the toneport GX DI-silver which has automatic upgrade to platinum. Sounds awesome!@!!!!! I love it. I just figured out my old presets last night, since my old computer died everything has to be redone. so stoked!!! I record so that I hear it reamped, and then reamp after and tweak right into the mix and compression, on the fly! so mixes come out better. its fricken awesome, you can have whatever tone you hear, seriously!!! all depends on your ability to tweak. this forum and reaper are sooo helpful that I am now ready to contribute my settings, here they are:
