POD help

Ok, for various reasons, I'm going back to a modeling device. Awhile back, I had an original POD, upgraded to 2.0, and liked it.

Here's the question.... if I can snag an XT for under $200, should I go that route rather than the 2.0?

Re: POD help

Features vs. Price, I think the Xt is a better buy. I just got mine yesterday afternoon and I've already got a good Mesa sound dialed in and a few Marshall sounds. Also getting very close to Vai's "Feather" tone. That said, I think I still have a long way to go. This thing is so versatile I could work on one sound forever.

Re: POD help

I only own the 2.0 as i snagged it used with the Large Boardboard controller for cheap... Oneday i hope to snag the XT version used and cheap too... until then i only know what the 2.0 sounds like... The 2.0 has a cool Boogie patch

Re: POD help

Here's how I see it:

If you want basic sounds and tones, and decent FX and you want to look elsewhere for your more creative sounds - Wah, Delay, Verb - perhaps you are doing dance music or something where you are running it into the front end of an amp to get the distortions etc etc - then 2.0 is a good bet.

If you want a true modeler - you are actually trying to achieve all those tones you like, from Vintage Marshalls, to cabs, to Mic'd sounds, to specific amp tones (Matchless, Marshall, Fender) and specific FX sounds like Univibes etc - then the XT is a good bet.

I like the XT because you can get a decent version of almost any sound on the fly, which can be great in a studio. In fact, I think some of them "feel" authentic. The Variac Plexi is a good example, it somewhat feels like a Variac would feel. You can debate the Uberschall and Diezel models. I don't care much for the Soldano, Bassman and Fender Deluxe sounds either. The Matchless and AC30, as well as Mesa Mark 2c+ can be useful, interestingly enough.

Just remember, with the XT, a lot of the "modeling" enver dials out. So if you go into an amp you might get pissed off that some of the tones will not just give you the basics, there is this digitally modeled thing that comes along with it. It will never replace your pedal board, if you are that type of player.

You can get the XT between 180-200.

Re: POD help

I've had the V-Amp2, POD 2.0, and XT.

There's nothing the first two can do that the XT can't, and it sounds infinitely better doing it. Seriously. I got mine for 185 used, one of the best purchases I made I'd say.

Re: POD help

You guys are basically reinforcing what I already thought. The fact that the XT does distortion pedals as well as amps kinda makes it a no brainer.

I was really trying to see if anybody shared the "2.0 sounds better" sentiments from Harmony Central. Somehow, I'm not surprised you don't :)

Re: POD help

JB, what I've been doing is using the Tube Screamer model to boost the gain on the amps. It works just like it would on a real amp, which is just amazing. I like the fact that you can run multiple effects at the same time. Can the 2.0 layer effects?

Yes and no. It's got a dial to select which effect you want, so you can't combine the effects of your choice, but it does have "Chorus + Delay" and similar options.

Re: POD help

Sad part of the 2.0 is the fact you can't add OD or Distortion box sounds in front of the amp models.....

Re: POD help

I heard it sounds bad to overdrive a POD :) I don't know I haven't tried it.
Another thing about the Xt is the USB connectivity. I already updated it to v3 and downloaded some patches. Most of the patches I downloaded sucked though. The Xt has the freedom to update and add extra amps.

Oh ya...I'm running it into the front end of my solid state twin and into my C30. It sounds good through both.

Re: POD help

i just sold by pod 2.0 and bass pod xt and bought the guitar pod xt since it can essentially do both. my first thoughts on the xt are "WOW!" i think this unit sounds fantastic. as olinmusic said the variac plexi sounds amazing. the heavy style amps really kick. i'd had the pod 2.0 for 5 years. the xt is a big upgrade. the amps are better, the sounds are better, and way more flexibility with the effects. i still need to upgrade the firmware to v3. i'm dying to hear what the orange amp model sounds like. you won't be disappointed.

Re: POD help

Now that I've had it for a few days, I've determined that the solid state is more transparent and it lets the real tone of the model come through. The C30 still sounds killer but it gets this wierd low end sound when I stop playing low notes, I haven't got it to EQ out. I have some good patches made and I am liking the XT alot.

Re: POD help

I have the metalshop pack... I really just use one model lately, and it's from the original set of amps (treadplate dual), but there are some fun things to do with it. I'd rather spend the $100 on the bass models.

If the bass pack had a Sunn model T, I'd totally go for it.

Re: POD help

I like the treadplate dual model, so far it's my favorite patch. The Marshall models are cool because there are so many variations.

What would be great is if Line6 allowed you to customize model packs or only buy a few. Like go on their site and buy any model you want for a few bucks. Or if you need a new effects pedal then go online and buy one. Or they could just include them all for free, I would be ok with that too.

Re: POD help

I was just messing with the OrangeAD30TC and it sounds really good. I havent played the real one so I can't compare it. I took the EQ settings I had on the Mesa patch and made the new one then I stuck a TS in front of it. Wow sounds amazing.
