Pod opinions

Re: Pod opinions

Robert, I have the room but not the cash...I'd love to have a screamin high gain tube head and 4X12 cab mic'd up but I just can't seem to find that extra $2000 laying around! Like you suggested, I don't think I would be using any of the on-board effects from the Pod. I'm learning my way around the Logic Express effects and I really like them.

Not a room in the sense that you have a dedicated 20' x 20' area to put an amp into but a room that is solid enough acoustically to actually get deceint sound quality in. I have a nice big basement that I can crank amps in but it is sonically so messed up that it's hard to get exceptional tone from it. Highly reflective parallel walls don't usually make for killer tone.

Shogun --

I had no intention of coming off as a sarcastic elitist. I only meant my comment as a lighthearted jab. People make lighthearted jabs all the time, sometimes at me -- it's just part of the atmosphere.

In my opinion, your clip didn't have as good a tone as the ones KV posted. To further clarify, I pointed out that I wasn't putting down your playing, just the quality of the recorded tone. If you like your tone, that matters more than what anyone else says. Of course, like Robert said, when you post a clip, you open yourself up for criticism -- one hopes that criticism will be constructive.

If you'd like some constructive criticism from me, here it is: The playing was good, but the sound quality didn't meet up to your playing. You may want to try different miking or mixing techniques. That's something I could use work on myself.

As for me being able to get good tones out of the POD in a couple hours, so what? What I think of as a good tone may totally suck to you. To a degree, tone is subjective.

Hope this helps clarify things a bit and clear some of the air.

Re: Pod opinions

that was a good explanation of what you thought, and i appreciate the comments. thanks for taking the time to explain because it was real helpful. i'll try to take things in a more humorous manner from now on.

Re: Pod opinions

Holy crap... take it to PM or something for everyones sake. You all better listen to Robert S. or you may not have the liberty to post here any longer. Please guys, lets try to not retort to anyones post in a personal manner.

OK, for my actual response LOL- Jeff I loved the tone in all the clips (not your personal clips, ive got most of your patches). I want those other patches btw.. shogun, I really liked your playing on that clip. The problem is that I can hear you slapping the pickup selector switch, and that possibly means you miced the room. Thats very hard to compare when the opposing (use that loosely) clips are direct, and processed.

The metal shop expansion pack is definately worth it, mainly the uberschall and big bottom amps just do it. I think the uber is my favorite amp model right now.. I can shape it to do anything. Scott, if you really want to save money, the cheapest is the original guitarport. Or the POD if you want a stand-alone unit, although I dont know what they support. I still use the guitarport and it is the best investment I have made since I started playing. I owe Line6 a lot of credit.. even if they did create an abominable amp such as the spider.

Re: Pod opinions

I never even listened to the clip. It won't play on my work PC.

I'm just playing around - this isn't / wasn't my fight to begin with.

But I do like my PODxt for recording at home.

Re: Pod opinions

they're right, the clip sucked. i don't have a pot to piss in for recording. in fact, i don't really know crap about recording so i'm going to take some lessons.
