Re: Poll: Does the Phase Inverter tube affect tone?

all i know is that i've got a jj ecc83s in the phase inverter spot in my amp:D

Re: Poll: Does the Phase Inverter tube affect tone?

This is an experiment in BS just as much as it is in tone-science. :9:

100% of voters says it does :9:

Re: Poll: Does the Phase Inverter tube affect tone?

I vote no just to be contrary. In reality, as has been said, "Everything affects everything."

Re: Poll: Does the Phase Inverter tube affect tone?

Yes, but not as much as other preamp-tube positions.

IMO, the PI tube, rather that affecting the "tone" of the amp, effects its balance between preamp distortion and power-amp overdrive. A hotter PI will shift the amp's distortion charater more to the output stage

Re: Poll: Does the Phase Inverter tube affect tone?

Sure---try a 12AX7 in a Fender 12AT7 slot. Vice versa for Marshall...

Re: Poll: Does the Phase Inverter tube affect tone?

Well I have a JAN Philips 5751 in my PI spot. I noticed that with my DDn and Invader when my master preamp volumes are on 10 I get some square wave clipping.

Re: Poll: Does the Phase Inverter tube affect tone?

The question should be, does a balanced PI affect tone?

No, I'm not really looking for an answer. I know it does. This thread is all about me since I made it. I just wanted to see how many people believe/do not believe that it affects tone. We don't need to get technical about sine waves and all that...

Re: Poll: Does the Phase Inverter tube affect tone?

Dude don't even start talking about the imperfections of balance! HIJACKER!!!!! :9:

Re: Poll: Does the Phase Inverter tube affect tone?

Fair enough. That said, I don't see how the phase inverter tube couldn't affect the amp's tone. Trying both current production and old production tubes in my amp, I've noticed that there's an audible, if sometimes subtle difference from one tube to the next. In the phase inverter, the audio signal goes through the tube, so yeah, that tube will color the signal a bit. However, I don't think the same tube would color the sound as much in the PI position as it would in V1, at least, not in the same manner. If anything, I think Rich S has it. The hotter the PI, the harder you're going to drive your the power section. Whether that's good or bad is up to your ears.

Re: Poll: Does the Phase Inverter tube affect tone?

It's fair or arguable to say that EVERYTHING !! in the signal path has some effect on tone. The 1st thing you need to understand is that although the PI tube is a preamp style tube. It's not part of the preamp. It's part of the power section. That's why in the PI slot usually you want your most robust tube,And not necessarily your most tone full tube. That tube generally goes in the V1 slot. As mentioned above the gain structure of the PI tube can have a dramatic effect on the amp, But balanced tubes?? I'm a none believer.:bs2:
