Re: Poll: Does the Phase Inverter tube affect tone?

A preamp pentode? While I wouldn't be too surprised that such a thing exists, I've never heard of one. Every guitar amp I've ever seen uses a 12A*7 dual triode type tube for the phase inverter.

Re: Poll: Does the Phase Inverter tube affect tone?

There is no need to vote, the answer is yes...if you swap tubes in the PI and don't hear a diffrence it's not the tubes or the amp it's you.

Re: Poll: Does the Phase Inverter tube affect tone?

In older Marshalls, it's the PI that clips when going "crunch", noy the power tubes.

Re: Poll: Does the Phase Inverter tube affect tone?

Such a weird question I almost didn't bother.

Every part of the audio chain (from the brain behind the fingers to the room the sound is heard in) will affect the tone. And some things are directly in the path (like the PI bottle) and directly affect the tone.

Put an identical tube in - you won't hear a change. Put the same tube model in and inter-tube variations in spec, or manufacturing differences between makers will produce subtle but noticeable changes. Put in a different model (like subbing 12AU7 for 12AX7) - well - does swapping in a 1litre Honda 4-pot for the 7.5litre Chevvy V8 in my 'Vette affect the performance. OK - that's a bit extreme, but you get the picture.

Next poll:- "Does the Treble Knob on my Bender Faceman affect tone"
Answer - the further you move it, the greater the effect.
(But if you have to ask, you need to pay more attention.....):)

Re: Poll: Does the Phase Inverter tube affect tone?

6SC7 was used in early tweed stuff up to about 54-55, both preamp and PI.

A few years back, someone did an analysis of a 5F6A Bassman and found that most of the distortion characteristics are first introduced in the PI...which follows through to Marshall designs probably.

Re: Poll: Does the Phase Inverter tube affect tone?

No, I'm not really looking for an answer. I know it does. This thread is all about me since I made it. I just wanted to see how many people believe/do not believe that it affects tone. We don't need to get technical about sine waves and all that...

Well, in that case, let's talk about you.

Had a lot of threads hijacked lately or something? ;)

:biglaugh: That was my weak attempt at humor...
