I don't notice a sound difference, but I think ebony looks more classic. Almost all of my guitars have ebony on them except a few of my super cheap guitars.

Back in the day you had more limited choices. A Junior had one pickup(usually a P90) in the bridge, a Special had 2 P90's & a rosewood board, a Standard had 2 humbucking pickups with a Rosewood board & a Custom had gold hardware, Ebony fingerboard and "Custom" appointments. It was pretty clear that as you stepped up the price also went up. Today you have so many different models that I don't think even Gibson knows what the difference is. For me I love both the Standards & the Customs. I've owned a Les Paul standard since '91 & its a great guitar but lately I have been warming up to some customs. If I had to pick one it would probably be a Standard!

I love the look and feel of ebony.

Ebony looks better to me in pretty much every case. However, that's pretty much the only real difference to me. The feel is also slightly different, but it's not a huge difference. As for tone, I don't believe anyone would be able to tell the difference between the two in a truly scientific test.

Ebony = Custom

Rosewood = Standard/Deluxe

-"Rob" Option for me

Ebony is too "slippery" feeling to me.

Yeah, it feels weird after years of rosewood. I prefer the warm tone of rosewood too.

I suspect some of the votes for ebony are based more on looks, and the fact it's associated with high-end guitars, than for it's tonal qualities.

The ebony boards I've played feel the same as the Rosewood. If there's a tonal difference between the 2 my ears aren't sophisticated enough to hear it. So for me the issue is strictly cosmetic. Some LPs look better with Rosewood, some with Ebony. If it's a toss-up I prefer the Rosewood. Just seems like the right color for a guitar fingerboard to me. I guess I'm just old school.
