Nothing sounds like a Gibson Les Paul, but a Gibson Les Paul. With that said, my Les Paul "substitute" has been a PRS McCarty (it does all the fat, warm and smooth stuff I expect a good Les Paul to do)

There are a ton of great guitars out there, Strat's, SG's, PRS, etc. I've played them all....
But........ there is no substitute for a Gibson Les Paul. If you find the right one, it will have the sound, feel, looks, and history that most guitars can only dream of.

i personally dont have the les paul bug. i really dont get it. yeah i guess paying for all the premium cosmetics is nice and i'm sure i'll get one down the line just cuz they're nice. but to me they dont sound like the ultimate guitars

You must not have the ultimate ears then.
Just kidding. Almost any guitar can sound good. But different strokes for different folks. I'm of the mindset that I'd rather pay $5,000 for something I absolutely love than $500 for something I'm only very happy with. If there's something I want more, I'll pay the money for it. So I'm in love with my Gibson, but I'd happily pay $3,000 for a White Falcon.

A freind of mine just bought one of these a few weeks ago. He left it at my place for a few days..FANTASTIC guitar !!
The stock pickups are really nice.

Yep and in finish, fret work and overall workmanship of the washburn USA's stomp a mudhole in the Gibson slop.
I have a 2004 Ibanez Artist AR 2000 Prestige that is the = in finish ,fretwork hardware materials ect of ANYTHING Gibson is throwing out nowdays!!

My:
Diodati 59Q, Edwards Sykes LPC, Diodati 58, Fernandes Ravelle Deluxe.
They all serve me very well.
And definitely get me in that LP tone spectrum.
Though the Ravelle is a tad brighter than the others.
The Diodati's are acrylic lacquer.
The Edwards and Fernandes are poly.
I'm not a fan of nitro. I just don't care for the feel and stickyness of it.
So, these guitars were a great alternative for me.

as for lawsuits: Most are very nice instruments. And some of them are really good Les Pauls. Many aren't. Caveat Emptor.

There are plenty of guitars out there. Les Pauls are awesome, but I like other types of guitars a lot too.

My Number ONE is a G&L Legacy, though I have several Les Pauls now.
I will admit, there is a certain "cachet" to a Les Paul. Hard to explain until you've fallen in lust with one.
But tone-wise--yes, there are guitars out there that can do the "Les Paul" thing quite nicely. Hamers, The Ibanez Artist, the Yamaha SG-2000, the Fernandez Ravelle, Schecter Tempest, et. al., will all get you there. If you want LP tone from a PRS--you really have to try the Santana model (not the SE--the real one).
And that's without going to the LP clones from Epiphone, Tokai, Burny, et. al.
I even have a couple of favorites that are off the radar--and don't even ask--I'm buying everyone of these beautys I can while the prices are low! LOL!
So, I love my Les Pauls, but I also love my "wannabes" too!
