Poly repair question

Is there any product out there that will melt with a poly finish for repairs?

I know when you spray on new nitro, it fuses with the old stuff and makes a (more or less) seamless repair. What about poly? I know about super glue drop fills, but I mean to spray on a larger area.

The guitar is a MIC Epi. I tested Rust-Oleum Lacquer, and that isn't doing it. What about Minwax spray on Polyurethane?

Re: Poly repair question

Try Deft Lacquer, or Duplicolor Car Clearcoat. (Make sure it's Lacquer, not the high-temp engine enamel one.)

Minwax spray on poly does not melt into the previous finish.

Re: Poly repair question

Epoxy works great to fill large gaps of cracked finnish... i found that out after my EPI LP neck repair...

why not just try some car finnish sprays...

Re: Poly repair question

Thanks fellas. The good news is the Rust-Oleum stuff came off with acetone, so I'm ready for the next trial. I'll try Deft Lacquer next, and if that doesn't do the trick I'll move to the car products.

Re: Poly repair question

If it's just in the poly which is a mile thick on Epi's, leave it alone. Relics cost more for a reason...they have character even if it's artificial. A sterile guitar lacks a story...but one with character lines is mature and shows that it's worthy of being played. Why do so many guitar players take sandpaper to the finish of a perfect guitar? To let the wood breath and allow the guitar and player to express themselves.
