Polyurethane Finish

I stained my unfinished Explorer type guitar body with minwax stain and then I put about three coats of minwax polyurethane on it. I was wondering how long I should wait for the finish to cure before I put it together. Thanks

The can said to wait 24 hours before light use.

Then you are good to go after 2 to 4 hours, right?

I've used minwax before and where it's OK after a day, I would give it about a week. Longer if your in high humidity. Guitar in my avatar is Minwaxed.

I would take what the can says and probably wait 2 or 3 times that. Just personal preference on these kinds of things...

I waited about a day when I used their wipe on poly. No tackiness or anything.

Thanks for the help. It is currently dry and not tacky but I want the finish to be hard enough when I put it together. I think I'm going to wait about a week based on what everyone said.

Yeah. About two to three times what the can says. A week would be preferable. Guitars typically don't get "light use".

By the way, is the car in your avatar yours, or just wishful thinking? Is it a '69?

poly doesn't take as long as nitro to cure. usually ok overnight

Nitro is lacquer...cures very rapidly (hours). Poly is a varnish which takes days to cure.
