Poor mans Soldano/Super Marshall?

Hey fellas!

I am on the market for a new amp (Vox AD120VTH got lost in the mail).

I love the tone of Soldanos but definitely can not afford them nor need the power of 100W. Can you guys point me in the direction of a Marshall voiced amp that can do high gain as well as a good decent clean tone? For clean tones, think hootie and the blowfish but with a little more grit... I can always use my volume control to tame clean tones that are breaking up a little.

I've heard good things about Traynors?

I'd like to spend about $600 for something new or used, combos and heads are both welcome. Thanks!

Laney AOR Pro-Tube Lead. Beautiful Cleans, with an OD infront of a high senstitivity channel you will get all the gain you need for any of the modern metal tones. You can find them for 400-500 depending on conditions. It is single channel amp though.

Re: Poor mans Soldano/Super Marshall?

Is that Laney single channel like the GH50 and GH100 series? Has anyone played the old Yamaha Soldano designed amps?

Re: Poor mans Soldano/Super Marshall?

Metalking: haha, a Splawn QR is definitely not a poor mans Soldano. Still too pricey. Did you get the QR with the updated clean channel? They do have killer tone though!

Thanks for all ofthe suggestions guys!

Yeah, it is a single channel amp, but my cleans up beatifully with volume swell and OD off, is it entirely clean? No, but it's clean and gorgeous enough to play any "ballad" for the lack of a better word. People often say its JCM800 on steroids, I wouldnt say so, it does have significantly more gain than JCM800 but the tone chrachtiristics are different, it is by no means Marshall bright, it has those signature Laney/Sabbath dark and mood mids, and with the with bass and trebble boosted it gets pretty "growly" like similar to how the Iommi sig sounds on his records now .... actually if you would ask me I would say he pulled bass and trebble on "Zero the Hero" back in the day. It is a very tube sensitive amp, JJ ECC83s Gold Pins make a world of difference in the V1/V2. It is also very cab senstitive, it should sound killer wih your V30 4X12.

No, not exactly for the poorman! I did get the new clean channel, pristine clean I'd say! There's a new version coming out with footswitchable "gears". I may be going for that version. I bought mine used. You can pick them up on E-bay fro $1200-$1600 most of the time......

Re: Poor mans Soldano/Super Marshall?

In regards to Traynors, I have two of them at my house. Where do you live? I am in California.

Re: Poor mans Soldano/Super Marshall?

I live in NH, haha.

So metalking:

with the current QR, you have 3 channels and assignable gears per channel? Or is the gear selection global for all 3 channels?

How does it work on the 50 watt setting, is it decently usable?

Re: Poor mans Soldano/Super Marshall?

I forgot, the original PV Ultra is a 3 channel monster. Clean, crunch, and heavy gain. I had one for several years. Has active tone controls, but can be found for 200.00 easily.

Two footswitchable channels: Clean & Overdrive

The overdrive channel has a three postion rotary switch "GEARS" (now footswitchable via midi as I understand it)
Gear 1-Plexi Heaven
Gear 2-JCM 800 only hotter
Gear 3-Jcm 800 even hotter!

In addition to that theres a footswitchable OD-1/Od-2 that adds an extra gain stage to the overdrive so really there's six overdrive options! AC/DC to Metallica easily.......

The gears nor the OD-1/OD-2 switch affect the clean channel.

I use mine only form band practice so far at half power 50watts.....100watts has more thicker lower end though I'd say.....I'm still in the "foolin' with it" stage!!

A series effects loop is included too that can be "true bypassed" via switch in the back........

Solo boost button on the footswitch as well........

Check out some clips at www.splawnguitars.com

Cheers!

Re: Poor mans Soldano/Super Marshall?

Believe it or not, the Crate V16 Palomino's layout is nearly identical to a slow. At first glance, the only difference I could see was in the values of the caps and resistors (and lack of an effects loop).

Re: Poor mans Soldano/Super Marshall?

my traynor yba-1 sounds pretty marshally & i got it for <$400. It's 50 watts but LOUD for that. It's real easy to mod em to plexi specs so modeling one to hot rodded plexi specs can't be that much more difficult
