Pop Punk Humbucker

PopPunk Kid

New member
So, my dad always starts his xmas shopping early, so I have to tell him what I want at about this time of year. I am looking for a good, chunky, hot pickup that is good for Pop Punk (as in Four Year Strong, The Swellers, Saves the Day, Fall Out Boy, New Found Glory, etc, etc..)

I have a dean strat that I got from a friend that is a couple years old. I am completely refinishing it and putting new hardware in. The pickguard is H/S/S, so I am not very worried about great cleans, as I will just switch to a single coil for that.

I am getting my first tube amp after christmas, and I am not sure what is is going to be, but as of now my roland cube 30x is set to:

British Combo
Bass: 5
Mid: 9
Treb: 7
Gain: 5-7, depending on what I want to play that day

I am looking at the Invader SH-8 or the JB SH-4, but all suggestions are welcome.

If any other info is needed or something doesnt make sense up here just tell me and I will post.

Re: Pop Punk Humbucker

The JB, Custom, and Custom 5 are pretty common for pop-punk and should sound great in a strat copy. The 498T is pretty common too, but that's with guys that keep their stock Gibson pickups. I know Blink used the Invader, but I honestly think you'd be better off with something less extreme.

Re: Pop Punk Humbucker

Yeah, I was afraid of the Invader being too muddy, that's what I have heard in reviews. I don't need to much heaviness, because I got this guitar for pop punk and cleans. I have an Ibanez that I use for metal.

Re: Pop Punk Humbucker

Custom is super versatile. Mag swaps can do crazy good things of you get bored with one permutation.

Saying what tone settings you want to use is a little silly. WHen you pop in a pickup you will probably have to change things up.

For pop punk you can use pretty much any humbucker in the lineup. I'd probably suggest a JB going by the bands you have listed

I was thinking I would list them so just in case it would help with choosing pickups (if one was too bass-y, or treble-y). And thanks everyone for the suggestions. So now it is pretty much between the JB and the Custom.

He was posting his current settings...

Re: Pop Punk Humbucker

Ok, Ive decided on the Custom. Instead of making a new thread for the same guitar, what would you guys recommend for the middle and neck single coils? I want something that will give me good, versatile cleans. Would one vintage sounding and one that is more modern sounding work well? I have only ever used humbuckers, and I have no idea what to look for or what to expect in sound.

Re: Pop Punk Humbucker

Yes. Do the vintage on the middle Ans the modern In the neck. I vote ssl-5 in the neck and something lower out put in the middle

Re: Pop Punk Humbucker

I'd say start off with a the SH-5 Custom.

Second this. I played in a skate-punk band for years using the C-5 in a Les Paul and it was awesome!! The regular old Custom sounds great for punk and I am willing to bet the hybrid would be killer as well.

Re: Pop Punk Humbucker

In a Fender bridge slot, I'd probably pick the Alnico II Pro (regular or Slash model), but the Custom would also be on my short list, as would the JB.
