Re: Pop-Punk Pickup Suggestions

I know, it's not real punk
I don't care
I'm not a freakin Cynical Punk who masks his Emo-Ness with a hatred for the world like a coward, people like you like to call "Punks"
Love, Hope, Unity

Anyway... I'm getting the Duncan Distortion. As well as getting a Liberator Put in so I can switch if I don't like it.

Re: Pop-Punk Pickup Suggestions

Sorry, I didn't mean anything by my comment, I just meant I was hoping it was someone asking for suggestions on that type of tone. That's just what I think of when I hear the term "pop punk". Sure, if I was still 16, I'd probably be calling you a poser while checking the straightness of my mohawk in every mirror I saw, but now that I'm an adult I don't really buy into the elitist, hipsterish, snobby, "my favorite bands are all trupunx, your favorite bands are POSERS" attitude that we all had as young, idealist punk rockers. I actually like Blink and the artists like them these days. It's a lot easier to listen to than old hardcore punk, that's for damn sure. I still hate Good Charlotte and the other bubblegum punk from that era, but it has nothing to do with their ethics, just their sound.

Re: Pop-Punk Pickup Suggestions

Punk is about Rebellion

Pop-punk is rebelling against traditional punk.

The idea of traditional punk would also be offensive.
as long as you're rebelling against something, you're doing it right

Re: Pop-Punk Pickup Suggestions

Totally apologize for what was said. Didn't mean to attack ;)

On topic: I don't know much about volume pots. If I'm getting new ones, Would I need 1 for my single volume control, or 2, one for each pickup?

Re: Pop-Punk Pickup Suggestions

Ok, Update
I'm gonna get the new pickups very soon
Now I'm choosing between three
-Alternative 8
-Dimebucker
-Screamin Demon
I'm gonna choose the one with the best High End Sizzle, so I need help from those with exoerience with these pups.
Also I can't stand Boosted Mids, so that's a no-no

Well, if you want highs, the Dimebucker will give it to you. It is a bit scooped so you don't have to worry about mids. The Alt. 8 is like taking the EQ and shoving everything up, so yes, it's going to have mids. I can't comment on the Demon. But I still think the Distortion is more versatile. But if I had to choose based on what you want, I think the Dimebucker would be best. It has more compression than the others so if you play with a lot of gain, it will keep it from becoming loose, and more be more controllable.

Re: Pop-Punk Pickup Suggestions

before splashing out on new pickups, try cutting out the tone cap from the bridge tone pot, this would restore some top end that the tone cap sends to ground, even full on at 10, it kills some top end. (Tom doesn't use tone pots either fwiw) also could try adjusting the height of the pickup, how close to the strings is it?

Re: Pop-Punk Pickup Suggestions

OK, I'll most likely get Dimebucker
To Jake: Well since I'm going to have to pay to get the electronics changed anyway. (Unless the tone caps are in the back panel, I'm not sure) Wouldn't it just be smarter to buy a new pickup while I'm at it? I'll be selling the Invader when I get the new pup so price shouldn't matter too much...

Re: Pop-Punk Pickup Suggestions

It's not a night and day difference without tone pots in the circuit but sometimes it's just enough to get you where you need to be. Saying that though Ive always found higher output pickups to be very dark in Gibson style guitars when they can shine in fender style guitars so don't think no load tone pots or another high gain pickup would help much.

Re: Pop-Punk Pickup Suggestions

if you still want a tone pot just because you could use a push pull or a fender no load pot, anyway, the high end of the dimebucker will chainsaw through the tone knob with ease, for a while i had my guitar without a tone knob, with the dimebucker it was not such a big diference, just a little hair on the top, with my eq pedal(one of the most important pedals on my rig) that little hair can come if needed

you may want to lower the gain and re-work your EQ, the high end of the dime is fizzy, but, the thing isn't harsh, is just how dime described it, can get the warmth, the high end will slice your face the good way instead of ripping it away while at the same time it will kick you in the guts, it will keep you tight, you will had to try hard to get a loose sound with it

it could easily be more power than what you can handle (the highest output of all the passive production buckers, is so high that only blackouts can compete output wise) but if you learn to go with that evil pickup you will be gifted, 'cause the tone can get twangy, classic rock, country, jazz, texas blues, with just the volume and tone pots (well in case you want to use the guitar for something else than punky stuff)

Indeed. Just like rock n roll in the 50's and 60's, outlaw country and punk in the 70's and 80's, metal, rap and hip hop in tbe 80's and 90's, etc.

If it's rebellion in your blood then you are true to the rebellious genre. I loved "pop" punk like the ramones, social d, mxpx, rancid, bad religion and billy idol's generation x when I was a teen. I still love the clash but with age came my preference for Waylon, Willie and the boys because rebellion will always be in my blood.

Play what you want, when you want and how you want.

Re: Pop-Punk Pickup Suggestions

Ok, I'll see what I can do with the tone pots

I see a lot of people on the forums hate the DimeBucker though so..... God, I'm so unsure

Re: Pop-Punk Pickup Suggestions

well some guys here actually love the dimebucker (i'm one of 'em), and had discovered how messing with some pots can turn a evil metal p'up a great tone monster for other genres, my best, is try it, if you don't like there is always the 21 day exchange, and you won't know if you like it or not if you don't try the p'up.

Re: Pop-Punk Pickup Suggestions

Also, I still need some help because...
Mahogany

I just want something from the oppisite side of the spectrum from the Invader
And i won't get a Dirty Fingers (for now)

Singed up for a contest
I could win a guitar with them in it (Tom Delonge Signature Es-33)
Knowing my luck i'd win it but by then already have a guitar with Dirty Fingers in it
(But wish me luck, I REALLY wanna win )

(Also... I hate the JB. Just throwing that out there)

Re: Pop-Punk Pickup Suggestions

10 years ago our band played the Blink songs 24/7 same with sum-41 and Green Day. The Sh-5 will give you the sound you want. The distortion is perfect for sum 41 sound. Have fun :)

Re: Pop-Punk Pickup Suggestions

I set the Vypyr to XXX model on Bass: 5 Mids 4 Treble 7

I listened to the Distortion audio samples and love how the highs sizzle. I'll probably choose that but whatever I choose I'll pair it with a Sentient.

Remember a XXX has an active EQ & the Vypyr does a great job of modeling that - Active EQ can Cut & Boost frequencies - Start with all the EQ dials at 5 and tweak from there, you should be able to dial out any muddiness

Re: Pop-Punk Pickup Suggestions

Hello. I am looking for a new pickup to put In my guitar. I recently got an Invader like Tom Delonge of Blink-182 had back in the day but I absolutely hated how obstructive the bottom end was. So now I'm looking for a new pickup. I'm a relatively new player, only playing guitar for seven Months. But I need treble in my mix to stick out. Don't get me wrong, I love the chunky, bottom end sound, especially distorted, but the define treble end is most important for me. If you need an Idea of the sound I'm going for check out 'Down - Blink 182' and 'Feeling this - Blink 182'

I'm considering a Full Shred or a Screamin Demon. I've had hot pickups In my guitar since I started so if you can point out the importance of output much appreciated

My amp is a Peavey Vypyr VIP 2 and Guitar is and Epiphone SG Special in case you need to know.

Thank You, in advance

For that 'Blink-circa-2003' tone you might wanna try the Gibson Dirty Fingers, I'm pretty sure thats what DeLonge himself was using back in those days and was the choice pup for his Gibson signature 335. A lot of people hate on gibby pups but they seem to often bring out the best in Epi's. I have an Epi SG special myself with a Dirty Fingers in the bridge and a Burstbucker 2 in the neck played thru an orange crush 30 and it is just excellent, a serious step up from the ****ty stock pups in any case. You should bear in mind that those songs were heavily produced and that tone may be the result of several layers of processing.
