I'm back at it again
New amp: Spider Valve MKII (1 of my Vypyrs came with bad transistors XD, and one had a volume problem.)
I've figured out my guitar is really warm, and I have more output on my pickups than I need. I'm considering a Custom 5 or a Screamin Demon, to be paired with a Full Shred or a Sentient.
Clean sounds now hold a higher priority. I'm still tempted to go for a DD or DC tho.

Hello. I am looking for a new pickup to put In my guitar. I recently got an Invader like Tom Delonge of Blink-182 had back in the day but I absolutely hated how obstructive the bottom end was. So now I'm looking for a new pickup. I'm a relatively new player, only playing guitar for seven Months. But I need treble in my mix to stick out. Don't get me wrong, I love the chunky, bottom end sound, especially distorted, but the define treble end is most important for me. If you need an Idea of the sound I'm going for check out 'Down - Blink 182' and 'Feeling this - Blink 182'

I'm considering a Full Shred or a Screamin Demon. I've had hot pickups In my guitar since I started so if you can point out the importance of output much appreciated

My amp is a Peavey Vypyr VIP 2 and Guitar is and Epiphone SG Special in case you need to know.

It has always been my opinion that ANYTHING will work for punk.

That is the whole ethos of the punk attitude . . . use what you have !

But if you feel the need to replace the pick up with a classy Duncan unit, then why not look into the Invader ?

I've recorded punk and pop punk with p90's, filtertrons, mini humbuckers and PAF replicas. in fact the highest output pickup I use is a custom 5. I think it's a lot to do with your playing style and I get plenty of aggression and attitude from my strumming hand.

Did you even read my post? I said I already had an Invader. Didn't like it. To dark and muddy for my Mahogony guitar (Well it may have an Alder core cause it's a cheap Epi but still)

NICE . . . perfect for PUNK, imho.

I sense a dig at the Spider Valve. I haven't bought it yet. I play it at all my lessons though. I'm currently ampless. I'm just running from a Line 6 Amplifi Fx100 to garageband on my computer. I have a show next week though. Me and a friend our doing something for our class. So i'll probably be renting a cheap speaker cabinet until I get the Spider Valve (Or maybe a Peavey Valveking, who knows?)

If you can get the sounds you want out of an amp, it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks about it.

I'm not a big Line 6 fan, but every spider valve I've played on sounded nice. I think modelling amps are great for newer players, as having all of the different amp models (while not 100% accurate) will let you experiment more and get a feel for what type of amp will best suit you and your style when you eventually decide to move on. And the tubes certainly help it sound better than the standard Spider series.

Yeah, well I'm still absolutely confused

Basically I want a bright high output pickup (a weird request, I know)
And it should sound good coil split
I'm stuck between an SH-5 Custom (which i hear might be too bassy) or a used Gibson Dirty Fingers (which I hear might be too clean)
The JB sounds too sandy and liquid so I fear the Distortion may be the same. I need help!!!

Edit: I'm also considering the Perpetual Burn p'up

Try it first. The Dimarzio distortion sounds great for pop-punk.

+1 to this. I've got one in a hardtail strat partscaster that works great. I've tried a PATB-2 for the same material (albeit with a floyd) and didn't like it much at all. The JB worked much better in that guitar.

I've got a dirty fingers and I've used it to play some blink stuff. It sounds nice but there's a lot better pups for the purpose. The dirty fingers takes a lot more to sound dirty, but cleans up much nicer than something like an invader

the dirty fingers is really clean even with that output, if you want a bright punk able humbucker wich doesn't need to be an scorcher you can use a Pearly Gates, a better idea is try to get a floor shop custom with 2 rows of screws and A5 mag.

if you want a big output with treble, or simply the most agressive humbucker just get a dimebucker, guaranteed instant agressive tone (even more agressive than the EMG 81, and thats why i love the thing for metal) so agressive even for punk

the duncan distortion is a long time punk favourite

the custom 5 might be a little scooped for a lot of guys

THANK YOU! I'm coming close to my final decision. Between the DD and the Dimebucker. Does anyone know if the Dimebucker can do cleans when split? That's the deciding factor for me.

if you split the dimebucker it almost doesn't matters in what guitar you install it, it will twang almost as much as a vintage tele......... that said, the dime has possibly one of the best cleans any high output bucker can had splited
