Possible NGD tomorrow - but first your thoughts!

So I'm definitely not gelling with my Jackson Kelly at all. It's a cheap guitar and it's showing everywhere, requiring more maintenance and mods that I'm willing to put into it.
So it's going somewhere else. I'm selling it. What to fill that gap with, though?

Today I might have had my answer. Turns out that I've been crazy for a Les Paul for the last few months, so today I tried some Epiphones.
I tried a Studio, a Standard and a Standard Plus Top Pro.

The Studio was fine, but the neck finish was pretty sticky and the all-black look is a bit cheesy and crap, right?
The Standard was definitely better, but it had a pretty strange finish: Some sort of sparkly pale blue with cream binding, a bit too delicate and pretty. Not really my thing.

The Standard Plus Top Pro is by far the better instrument of the lot.
The Probuckers are pretty decent actually, if lacking a bit of bite on top (I'm blaming the old strings) but way better than the other two.
Also the easiest guitar to play from the lot, it sounded the best and it had a beautiful "Heritage Cherry-something" finish that looked slightly more pale than in this picture:

And it had a 10% discount due to a minor ding right on the lower end of the fretboard, right on top of the neck pickup. Nothing that some shoe polish wouldn't fix. :D
So the same price as a regular Standard.

Any of you tried/own one of these? I thought it was killer.
Only contender in the price range would be a PRS SE 245 I think, which I didn't try today.

Personally I love Epiphone guitars especially the Pros of any model. Best bang for the buck. Look for a 60s Tribute.

Nothing wrong with a decent Epiphone.

Re: Possible NGD tomorrow - but first your thoughts!

Yeah those probucker pickups are nice
New strings should doher up

Mine is lemon burst
Plays like a dream

Slim fast neck

The only thing about PRS is that wide neck

I just can't get my hand around it

I'm sure I could given time. But I don't wanna.

Epi performs

Looks like a good find, but be sure to at least try the SE 245 (if possible) before buying this one. I don't know how availability is in Chile, but the PRS SE line are amazing guitars for the money.

That being said, if the SE isn't your thing it looks like you know which one speaks to you.

Re: Possible NGD tomorrow - but first your thoughts!

I played one a couple weeks ago, pretty nice guitar. If I were you I'd save a little while longer and get the BH V, but if you're getting a LP for sure definitely get the best playing one you can lay your hands on and upgrade the pickups when you get a chance.

Re: Possible NGD tomorrow - but first your thoughts!

The Probuckers are nice pickups and those higher end Epi guitars are well built, especially for the price. Sure beats the heck out of an entry level Gibson USA model, as you discovered.

If you're getting a new "Pro" PlusTop for the price of a regular standard and you like the way it plays and sounds, then why WOULDN'T you get it? :)

What is the BH V you're referring to? Thanks..

He means the Epiphone Brent Hinds signature Flying V.
Never even seen one in the flesh here.

There was one being sold among my contacts but it had a neck repair. I think it's gone by now.

Re: Possible NGD tomorrow - but first your thoughts!

I have an Epiphone Les Paul Custom from somewhere around '05-'08 (can't remember), and it's a great guitar. It currently has a Custom and a Pearly Gates in it, and is still one of my go-to guitars, even after buying my Gibson Les Paul Standard.

So if you like it, go for it.

Thanks for clarifying. [emoji6]

Epiphones have a great chance of being a great guitar. Like many brands, I've played stellar ones and a few dogs. The Standard Plus Top gets great reviews. Out with the guitar you don't like and in with the new!

Re: Possible NGD tomorrow - but first your thoughts!

Not gonna happen today; I was due a payment for today but it's coming tomorrow.

I have to say; I watched a few videos and clips comparing a PRS SE 245 to a Epi LP and the PRS is way too close tonewise to my Ibanez SZ, it has a slicy top-end and doesn't bark the same in the mids, which is what happens with a friend's LP I've tried through my rig. It does that raunchy thing, meanwhile my SZ wants to be downtuned and chug the hell out of everything.
So I'm definitely going for a Les Paul.

Re: Possible NGD tomorrow - but first your thoughts!

GAAAAAAAAAAH!

So the payment is done but it won't be actually usable until tomorrow.
WTF, bank?

Can't ****ing wait!

Re: Possible NGD tomorrow - but first your thoughts!

See if they will hold a hot check for you

Tell your girlfriends mother your plight
See if she will front you the money till tomorrow

Hahaha! I already called the store, they say they're keeping the guitar away for now.
Can't pay with a check; otherwise I'll lose the discount they offered me. I talked them into it and I noticed they weren't too comfy with the idea.
It's a small-ish store so I'd rather not make them uneasy.

EDIT: Went to the store again today, and to other stores as well to check the competition.

Again, the PlusTop Pro came on top as my favorite guitar today.
The regular Standard with the Alnico Classic pickup sounds muddy in comparison and doesn't look as good.
Also tried a PRS SE 245 and a regular SE Standard 22 with a huge discount and I didn't like them as much. Good guitars, but way too close to my Ibanez SZ in construction and tone, and I have no idea where the extra money goes.
The nut's still crap, the pickups are meh and the hardware isn't spectacular.

Also, the top on the PlusTop Pro is way better in person than in pictures.
Looks linda tacky and washed out in the picture I showed you, but it looks much more defined in the guitar they have in the store.

Tomorrow's the day! And I can't wait. :)

EDIT #2: Don't want to keep pushing this one up until I have it here. But it's mine!
I did take it straight to my trusty tech for a fret check (a bit rough here and there), a bone nut and other checks, alongside my Partscaster which had never visited a tech in its lifetime.
So I'll have pretty much two new guitars tomorrow, since the Strat was impossible to setup due to fret wear, a worn nut and a neck that needed reseating/shimming.
They'll both be ready for tomorrow afternoon.

I'll officially be the happiest man on Earth! :D

Oh yeah.
I'm terrible at taking pictures and so is my cellphone, but I'll make sure to really bring the best out of my modest, but happy guitar family. :D
