Possible to Cop SRV tones with a Tele or a Paul?
Who here gets Stevie Ray tone without a Strat? Is it a lot tpo do with the amplifier or what? How close can you get with a Paul and split pups? A Tele ( and in what configuration) ?

If course you can do it. He played Teles and Les Pauls during his career. Albeit brief periods, but still.

Tele with an SSL-1 in the neck position. I have a spare pickguard downstairs with an SSL-1 in it. Easy swap, since my Tele has an HB route at the neck.

Only if you've copped his skills as well. Otherwise, it doesn't matter if you use an SRV sig strat through a Diaz modded Tubescreamer into a $12K Dumble. It'll still sound like a bucket of crap.

Exactly!

Play his licks with his technique through a big, loud fenderish amp, adding a little overdrive when needed and you'll sound close enough.

Obviously a strat with the right rig will be the best way to get his strat tones.

But copping his attitude and attack on the guitar is more important. If you play the right notes and style for Pride and Joy on a Tele there is no SRV fan who won't appreciate your effort.
Being a 10 thumb talentless noise-polluter on a SRV clone rig is most likely to get you a well deserved beer bottle in the face.

This is true. But I lose interest even with the good clones. I always think chasing someone's tone with the gear you have is a great exercise, but in the end I'd rather hear your unique tone than a clone of someone else's.

Yeah, when you can push 13s thru the top of the guitar & shatter bottles w/your fretting hand you'll be in the ballpark...
:D

At least it's a "good " tone to chase...

Re: Possible to Cop SRV tones with a Tele or a Paul?

A lot of guitarists out there are on a quest to research SRV's gear & recreate his tones precisely: the guitars, amps, pedals, & his string gauges & preferred tuning. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but despite his well-known equipment preferences, a lot of the SRV tone really comes from his skill & playing style.

Re: Possible to Cop SRV tones with a Tele or a Paul?

I've got an all mahogany PRS style guitar that has what I think might be low or medium output pickups as well as a TBX tone pot. Turning it all the way up (ie, cutting both treble and bass frequencies) and using the neck humbucker only gives me some very interesting, single coilish tones. So if you're playing a Lester, you could try just swapping your neck tone pot for a TBX and see how you fare. Cheap and probably not too tricky to do if you're adequately handy with a soldering iron.

Re: Possible to Cop SRV tones with a Tele or a Paul?

I played Pride and Joy in my old band using a humbucker equipped telecaster (with the neck bucker split) and on a traditional tele. No one ever complained.

Playing in his style is far more important.

You can get SRV's tone with anything. I use a mandolin through a Mesa Triple Rectifier. Its all in the hips...

Re: Possible to Cop SRV tones with a Tele or a Paul?

i used to work at Steve's Music in Montreal many moons ago, and the front counter sales person came upstairs and asked us to track down every Alembic Stratoblaster we had in stock. SRV was playing that night, and his guitar tech was downstairs wanting to buy every single one. One of our full time luthiers managed to snatch one before they all got sold because he figured out what was going on and, being a player himself, always suspected Stevie had some other trick up his sleeve. Was that it ? We'll never know for sure but that same luthier swears he saw video footage of Stevie riding one of his tone knobs like a gain on his #1 Strat.
