k, first time playing out wiht the quick rod and splawn 4x12 last night...

in a word? it killed...by far, the nastiest sounding, pissed off amp I've ever played through....for such a religious man, scott splawn makes one of the most evil sounding tone generators I've ever heard, that's for sure...lol...

and man, was I loud...but you know it's good when the other guy in the band's always tellin' you to turn down, but tells you this time not to because it sounds so friggin' good that it wasn't an issue =D

third gear rocks worlds..

my brother in law taped the show for us on his camcorder...have to figure out how to get it from the vhs to the computer....also have to see if the sound quality's ok..if it's half decent enough, it'll make it to my website..

for any of you on the fence, drop what you're doing and get the quick rod IMMEDIATELY! =D

I'll address this in two parts =)

I had the master at about 10 or 10:30 (o'clock..there are no numbers..lol)....thing didn't hiss or anything....it was dead quiet....and I run it LOUD with GAIN baby =D no feedback or anything....

as far as being fizzy at lower volumes...not true....does it sound as angry and huge as when it's turned up to gigging volume? of course not..it's a 100 watt monster...tube amps, no matter WHO makes them or HOW much they cost are made to be turned up at least a little bit....

if you listen to the clips in my signature, those were all recorded on full power with the master at about 7:00...VERY low...and they sure don't sound fizzy =) especially the ozzy and we die young clips...

I just think when it comes to tube amps, some people don't know what they're talking about (I'm not saying this in a bad way, jsut saying that not everyone's educated about them)...they buy a 50 or 100 watt monster and expect to get the hugest sound possible with the master all the way down..this is simply not going to happen..with ANY amp...always sounds different at bedroom volumes than at gig volumes...

BUT, you do NOT need a power break or hot plate with this thing..cause it still sounds good at lower volumes....

so I hope I answered your questioned or dispelled any doubt you had =)

Hi OlinMusic,

I received my Splawn Quick Rod about 2 weeks ago,and I also used it at a gig for the 1st time on Saturday. The room was small, and I was using it on 1/2 power. You can check out my video clip here from the gig and judge for yourself (https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=59359), but I can address your question here as well.

Noisy? Not at all!! In fact, the Splawn is quieter than most of the high gain amps I have ever played. Unlike Shredder, I prefer 2nd gear, but I'm strictly an old school metal guy. I would use 3rd gear for tracking solos, tho.

You are going to get some noise when running a valve amp with high gain and high volume ... there is quite a bit of thermal noise, for instance, which someone may mistake for something else if they don't know what to listen for.

I also run 2-3 pedals in front of my amp: an HBE Dos Mos, CPR, and Big D. Any added noise from those pedals? NO!!!

As for it being 'fizzy' at lower volumes ... The amp is incredibly dynamic as well as high resolution. I think that the fizziness you heard about has more to do with the guitar in question than the amp. I have played my QR with a hard ash guitar, 2 alder guitars, and 2 maple guitars thus far, and each guitar sounds very different from each other. There is no added hash in the upper freqs, no smearing in the midrange, no compression, tubbiness, or bloating. My speaker cabs have something to do with this as well > both of my cabs are extremely clean:

I hope this answers your question! :)

LOL...

the only one that's done with the petrucci is the latest we die young clip..the rest are all with my faithful lynch with the JB in the bridge =)

Re: post gig report--SPLAWN content

TO--

when I go third gear, I keep the gain a little lower..cause I find anything above 10:30 or so to be a little too much...but I find it to be like first gear on steriods =D which is why I dig it...ohhhhh yeahhh..heheh

Re: post gig report--SPLAWN content

Anyone have any clips of one of these things with some sort of Gibson???? All you Lynch guys make tracks with superstrats :)
