Post what you built !

I know there a few people on the forum who like to build their own guitars from parts they take everywhere. While I probably wouldn't/couldn't do it myself, I think it's a rather nice idea, and I'd like to see what goes on in your wicked minds. So post them here ! (Warmoths included)

You knew I'd be all over this one...right? :)

Follow my build progress here http://phinnguitars.blogspot.com/

I designed (borrowed from other designs?) the body myself on a cardboard box on New Year's Eve. I made the body from a slab of mahogany. I got Tommy at USACG to build the neck, and holy hell, is it glorious.

The thesis of the guitar is "everything I like, nothing I don't" so its got a lot of obvious stuff like the shape - somewhere between a PRS Singlecut and a Telecaster (my two go-to guitars), it's obviously got a Tele style bridge and bridge pickup (SD Quarter Pounder, thanks to jeremy), since that's my favorite bridge pickup tone, and a slew of other more subtle stuff like the roundover radius, the switch I'll use (Gibson style, not Fender) and the weird neck specs (see blog), to the pickup and switching configuration that I think will be pretty damn awesome.

Plus some stuff that will make you say "damn that's cool" when the guitar is done. I'm keeping what that is under wraps for now, because I don't know if I'm going to be able to pull it off

This guitar is called the Phinn Guitars T3 tentatively, but I am up in the air about the name, because I want a sustainable and systematic naming system, because I like the shape and want to build a lot of them.

This guitar will be finished in white with little to no clear coat (neither nitro nor poly! WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW?!) and will have a dark tortoise shell pickguard. I will probably do a body-color headstock, because, let's face it, they are bad-assed.

Re: Post what you built !

Last time I showed off a build, the body design ended getting copied by another builder *Angry*

Nothing gets shown again, until I have it copywrited. That being said I have a really good new design for the headstocks.

That sucks. I don't know why, but I would hate to see the design I posted up there show up as a $2000 Collings or something a year from now.

Although I have little room to protect that design - it is pretty much the upper curve of a PRS Singlecut and the lower curve of a Fender Telecaster, with some by-hand blending.

Just for the record - I do not think I am a design genius or anything - I just traced guitars that I liked onto one piece of cardboard and stared at it for a while until a shape idea "leapt off the page" at me.

Please come up with a name instead of a number. I'd rather you called it a Phinn Fang Foom instead of a T3485932-a23.

That's basically what happened, except with a smaller luthier. Granted he ignored some of the basic principles of why I designed the body the way I did.

Looks wise it was a hybrid of an Alembic Skylark and a Parker Fly (hard to explain). I'll probably build two others outside of the prototype just because it was meant to be the ideal body style for my playing.

I use a similar method. I start from a generic body size/style template (big/medium/small LP, strat, 7/8 strat, tele, exotic) then start adding in the design elements such as horn style, routing paths, control layout, pickup layout, bridge layout. Etc.

Now I just need a workspace so I can finish them

Looks wicked but cool ! Don't sell it to Gene Simmons :laugh2:

I had a lot of help with this one. A very close/old friend painted the body. It is a Gold base with variegated and white golf leaf. The neck is a "V" neck with a brazillian RW fingerboard. It has a set of Fralin Blues Specials and they sound awesome. Cris Mirabella of Mirabella guitars put this all together.

This one I did mostly by myself, but Cris helped when i ran into trouble. Its a Anderson body, a flame maple neck with a brazillian fingerboard. She has a set of Surfers in her. Great guitar. The cheap Klusons I have on her will need to be changed at some point. they rattle from time to time.

Antoria Guitars (I think) body, unknown neck, scratchplate and wiring is from a 1993 US Strat and pickups are aged Bareknuckle Mothers Milks. The body was originally black but myself and a friend stripped it, put linseed oil on it and then sealed that with wax.

Roger Giffin Ash body, Mexi Fender neck (from TOs Roland Ready Strat), allparts scratchplate and electrics and the pickup is a Bareknuckle Cold Sweat.

This is 1 my guitar tech had built from parts and I liked it so bought it from him. It's an Allparts Alder body, Japanese Fender neck (very chunky for a tele), Allparts bridge, Allparts Bakelite scratchplate and pickups are Bareknuckle Blackguard 52 Flats.

Re: Post what you built !

I'm not gonna pass a chance to post that one again.

El Cheapo tele kit (100$). I made "most" of the hardware with scrap metal I had around (excluding tuners and bridge)... The neck plate's from an old lawnmower blade, pickguard and control plate from an old metal sheet (all rusted) and the jack input (no pic) was made from an aluminium serial number plate from a completely rotted pick-up trucked dumped in the woods.
