Potentiometer Taper Issue?

I recently wired a guitar with audio volume and linear tone pots, as that is what I saw recommended online. The problem is that all the change in volume occurs between 10 and 6 and everything under that might as well be off. The tone control has the same problem where everything happens between 1 and 2 and the rest has almost know difference. It's right handed so reverse pots are not the problem, does anyone else have experience with this issue?

Re: Potentiometer Taper Issue?

Yap use linear for volume and audio for tone. Then either attach the tone to the middle lug on the volume pot (50s), or use the middle lug on the volume for input and the left lug for output. This will make it taper nice and long from 10 down to 1 like it's supposed to.

I have an old bass that I wired with the pots opposite to this. Now I understand why you do it this way.

Re: Potentiometer Taper Issue?

I fiddled with pots so much this past year to find something I like.

Re: Potentiometer Taper Issue?

I like the CTS Vintage Taper pots for volume. Mojotone sells them as do several other places.

Re: Potentiometer Taper Issue?

So just switch them? How does Gibson do it? Because I find they have the best taper to their pots.

Re: Potentiometer Taper Issue?

I was looking at the tapers Gibson uses over the last week

some they use audio taper for both
some they use linear taper for both
some they use linear volume and audio tone

none use audio volume and linear tone

Carvin and Ibanez use Linear volume and Audio tone

my Epi uses all linear

post an image of the wiring the way you have it
it may be something as simple as a wire out of place

A linear volume with 50s wiring (tone connected to middle lug) will taper correctly and be usable below 5 regardless of brand.

Re: Potentiometer Taper Issue?

I used to be a 'linear for everything' guy and have recently went back to audio for volume. It's always a constant struggle

Re: Potentiometer Taper Issue?

A little potentiometer factoid: most log pots aren't log at all. They simply use two different linear resistance tracks connected somewhere in the middle. I believe the more expensive log pots are true log. You'd have to measure one to be sure.
