Power amp for Line 6 rig?

Re: Power amp for Line 6 rig?

One thing to remember with this setup is that you're using actual guitar speakers so you'll want to turn the speaker sim off on your patches or you're going to end up with some mud.

Using Line6 stuff with the built-in speaker sims usually works best with an FRFR (Full Range, Flat Response) setup. Line6's own amps came with speakers with a flat response designed by Celestion for them.

For what you'd want to do I'd probably look at a Samson or QSC (just as examples) power amp in the lower wattage ranges (like 120) and run it without the speaker sims into that cab.

Since the Pod Pro is doing all the actual tone shaping work you don't want a power amp voiced for guitar. Again, you'll end up with mud because you'd have a midrange emphasis being amplified with another midrange emphasis.

And also - I'm not sure how many solid state watts I actually need to keep me happy. Is a cigar-box-sized 100w solid state power amp going to throw the same SPL as a 100W JCM800?
Watts is watts is watts is watts.

The thing is that a JCM800 2203 hits 100W at about 4 on the master if the gain is dimed. A "100W" Marshall actually puts out between 150W and 180W depending on the B+ voltage. Wattage rating for tube amps is max clean power. Once the power amp starts to distort all bets are off with wattage ratings.

That said, you have a Vintage 30 (65W) and a Lynchback (50W). Essentially you have a cab with a limit of 100W power handling. If you were running a tube head I wouldn't recommend anything higher than a 50W head with that cab due to transient spikes and the fact that a 50W head dimed will hit 80 or so watts. A solid state power amp won't exceed the advertised wattage but can still have some transient spikes which would stress the speakers, so even a 100W solid state power amp would be pushing it.

SPL is a function of power (wattage) hitting a speaker and the cone moving. 50W from a tube amp hitting those speakers will move the cone just as much as 50W from a solid state amp.

He's right, you know. Electrons don't care if they're propelled by a tube or by a MOSFET.

Re: Power amp for Line 6 rig?

Has anyone tried using a hi-fi (stereo) amp for use with a modeler?

I've played Fender Mustang through Luxman stereo amp with threeway floor speakers. Sounds distant and very roomy, like a "stadium tone". Works for The Who or Queen, not so good if you want warmth or don't like that feel of distance in tone.

Che_guitarra, we have shipped both the PS170 and PS700 with the correct AUS voltage and plug type to Australia. Please contact our distributor Dominant Music or your local SD dealer to learn more about purchasing one.
Thanks!
