need help on PA stuff...

I need either a powered mixer (kind of preferred), or just a power amp. I already have a lexicon lambda which could be used as a preamp

EDIT: suggestions would be appreciated

Re: Power amp/powered mixer?

More info needed. Where will you use it, how many voices & instruments, what sort of band? What kind of speakers are you driving?

Separate the mixer from the power for a couple reasons. The biggest one is, the powered mixer is really only good for set-it-and-forget-it mixes from the stage. If you ever plan on using a soundman to actively mix a show, get a separate mixer that can go in the back of the room.

These days, I think a mixer and powered speakers is the hot setup. A lot of the powered speakers have small built-in mixers that would suffice for a solo singer/guitar or singer/keyboard act. Add a mixer for more players, add a sub for bigger rooms. It's very modular and scalable.

Re: Power amp/powered mixer?

for me its just going to be vox, guitar, drums, bass. we(/I) play anywhere from indie to stoner rock. I haven't quite looked at speakers yet.

Re: Power amp/powered mixer?

I stand by the mixer/powered speakers setup - best compromise of eay setup and audio capability. JBL EONs if you can afford them, there are plenty of others if you can't.

Re: Power amp/powered mixer?

as Rich S said I think for full bands seperate power amp, mixer and speakers is good unless you get active speakers which are also decent and can be versatile. If you play only small pubs and clubs you'll get away with a small powered mixer but once you have to play in a hall or outside it can be different.

Also I've found places with good sound around here in particular a local venue I've played a lot has a big desk that feeds a mixer (like one without faders) with a mixed signal (and I think seperate moniter mix) which passes through crossovers then seperate power amps for the subs, the FOH and the monitors. I know this is too elaborate for what your thinking but the idea is if you have seperate desk, power amp and speakers with hiring of only a few things you can get really good easy to use sound for bigger venues.
