Power Amp safe to de-solder?

Re: Power Amp safe to de-solder?

google smallbox

that's disgusting. I'm talking about a STEREO receiver, not a female "receiver".

J/K. Will do, but what exactly am I looking for in this google?

Also, a forum bro, offline said I'd be okay if it hadn't ben plugged in for a few months (check) and I wore rubber gloves (which I have). Any rebuttal to this?

Discharge all the large caps anyways...then you are sure.

This will solve your Problem......Just Open her up, Plug her In, Use Tweezers and A Soldering Iron....If ya get Zapped.....well.....The world will be A Better Place:D

I guess that's what I get for asking you to put your two cents in. I'll make sure I'm holding your hand when I do this!!

:laugh2::laugh2::laugh2:

sorry bro...I don't swing that way!!

Ok fine, I'll punch you in the face right as I'm about to electrocute myself thus having my fist stick to your face and fry your brain (or what remnents of a brain there are). :chairshot :chairshot :chairshot

Steve...read between the lines here 'bro !

Mitch is telling you to educate yourself...then start messing with the components. That is my take on it anyway.

Re: Power Amp safe to de-solder?

So I flip over the board, take a lightbulb, put the socket part to the leads and watch it light? And if it doesn't light the cap is discharged? Sounds like a sweet idea.

NO...you wire a light bulb socket with two INSULATED wires that have INSULATED aligator clips on the ends. Scew the light bulb into the socket. Put one clip on each of the cap leads. The light bulb acts as a power resistor.

OR
Use a power resistor as in method #3 (solder some insulated leads and insulated aligator clips to it also).

hmmm. BTW, I wont be doing any of these for another few days now, cause I'm trying to gather a good approach at doing this. I will announce when I will open the box up.

There was an old advertising slogan many years ago..."Live Better Electrically" ....it does not apply to being in the electric chair...or the one you are sitting in at your electronics bench.

Another excellent habit is to keep one hand in your pocket when you are doing this stuff.

Many readers will view some, or all, of this as overkill (no pun intended)...but learning and using these concepts/techniques early will always pay off through time.

Re: Power Amp safe to de-solder?

Any stereo equipment from this era will be designed with discharge resistors across all major caps. The chances of any having a lethal charge are about .000001%. Then again, do want to risk your life on that percentage for a used resistor. ;)

Read my thread called "Get a meter". Then get one and check them yourself.

There probably are some worthwhile parts in there, if you know how to identify them. The power transformer is one expensive part thats worth salvaging. But then again, only if you can actually use it for something. I have old transformers that are 30 years old. Haven't used 'em yet. :D

Yeah, that's one main part I want to salvage. The receiver says it can handle 100W so that's a pretty powerful transformer, which I could use in making a tube amp or something. Also I can see in a bit into the receiver and there's some caps/resistors with some leads left, that look like they're worth trying to salvage.

I haven't touched the thing yet, and I think I'm going to bring it to someone to discharge it for - and maybe show me how they do it - andthen pull the board out, take pics, get your opinions on what to salvage and go from there.

Thanks for all the info and warning, I almost actually took it out and touched it, but something ringed in my head that i should probably check with the forum bros. Thanks again. Peace.

Re: Power Amp safe to de-solder?

BUMP!!

Any more advice? tips? Criticisms? People willing to risk the electrocution for me? Anything?
