PowerStage 700 Now Shipping!

Re: PowerStage 700 Now Shipping!

I've heard it with an Axe-FX, but I wasn't the one playing, and the person was using a guitar cab. I don't know if the cab sim in the PowerStage 700 is an EQ preset, or something more going on. But as more as these are out there, we will start seeing 2nd hand videos, as well as users pop up in this and other forums.

Re: PowerStage 700 Now Shipping!

I wish they would make a smaller version of the 170,,,,,,or give the option to to halve the output.
This way a smaller 2x12 cabinet or a pair of 1x12 cabs could be used.
The whole point of a small portable pedal sized amp is negated by its need for a large speaker cabinet.
These points aside, the 170 and 700 seem to be absolutely dynamite!

Re: PowerStage 700 Now Shipping!

I picked up a PS700 a few weeks ago. I'm using it with a modeler (Boss GT100), run stereo into two EVM-12L cabinets. I haven't played out with it yet but my experiments at cranked volumes have been pretty exciting. Thus far, I'm mostly using it for practice at very low volumes and it's great for that as well. I was worried about it being overkill power-wise, but now I don't see any disadvantages in having all that juice on tap while running it at quiet volumes.

Summary -- I love this thing!

170w is a fine size. you dont need to turn it up any louder than you want and that 170w @ 4ohms is 85w @ 8 ohms or 48w @ 16 ohms

I also use a GT100 and just use it either with headphones or through the aux in of a THR10C for home use but I would like something like the Powerstage 170 and a single compact speaker for small gigs, maybe a pair of them for medium gigs.

Hmm, 48w at 16 ohms sounds cool.so I wont blow a 75w 1x12 cabinet even if I crank it up a little?

you should be able to hear it if you are hitting your speaker too hard, i use a 1000w bass amp with a 700w cab all the time and never have an issue.

You should be absolutely, 100% safe! You will not be anywhere near overtaxing the speaker even when cranking the PowerStage.

Re: PowerStage 700 Now Shipping!

If I wind up sticking with guitar cabs for my Helix, I think this amp is probably the ideal solid state amp. But what I keep wondering about is, how well would it work powering a FRFR cab? How much does it color the sound?

This is the thing...if you use a Helix or a Fractal, and use the cab/mic models...the PowerStage (either one) is perfect into a FR/FR cab. If you are not using the cab/mic models, and only use a preamp from the Helix/Fractal units, put it through a guitar cab. I've used it into a full range cab, with amp/cab models and it is excellent.

Yep, that's exactly what I'm talking about. I know it'll do the full amp models into a guitar cab just fine, the demos of it doing that are impressive. I just haven't found any demos of it running amp models with IRs/cab Sims into a FRFR cab, hence the question.

Thanks!

This question is for addressing the FRFR in application of using it with a T.C.Helicon VL3X for it's ability to
not only emanate the different sounds of guitars ( electric clean & dist. / acoustic ) simultaneously with a vocal out in
a P.A. type application .

Well, most recordings done with modelers don't use an actual cab, they just go direct. Live, I send one set of outputs to either IEMs or a set of FR/FR speakers, with another set of outputs going direct to the PA. It sounds like a CD out there.

That's a good question, I haven't been able to find any THD specs on these. But being geared for guitars, I would imagine that there's more distortion than a PA amp, since harmonic distortion does sweeten a guitar tone.

Yeah, I get that. I've been researching the subject, ad nauseum, ever since I got my Helix about a year and a half ago. But I'm still making up my mind about what else I want to put in that rig, and since I'm not in a band right now, I have time to think it out, ask questions, ect.

Hello Gone_Shootin :

This is an area for exploitation , with the popularity of live looping solists
filling the ranks daily as they master their looping device be it a hardware
unit or a software driven pc/mac laptop .

:thumbsdow
I used to lugged 2 heavy big old 400 watt ( 2X200 watt RMS stereo 8 ohms )
power amps and hooked my 12 channel mixer and FX unit to drive
some nice Black Widow 15" speakers and Altec horns . I could fill a
big room nicely with this bi'amped set up . :headbang:

This set up was for a four piece , but also for duet and eventually
solo when I got my Digitech GNX4 wired and my guitar chops in
stage performing order .

I've down sized considerably now with the new technology for
soloing for small venues like my coffee house gigging , but , I
would like more power for some  .

:smoker:
I like heavy tube amp heads removed from speaker cabs and have their own
enclosure , doing this makes the speaker cab easier to lift too . Powered cabs
can be a heavy lift with amps inside them for the bigger powered speakers
needed in some nightclub situations .

One of those SD amps driving a sub cab and the other stereo a pair of FRFR P.A.
speakers I can EQ to my delight look's like a worthy potential to consider providing
as I asked - What's the THD - that's the biggie that make's it or break's it for myself .

;)I found my portable busking/coffee house solution , I can really make this small scale
amp pump really nice stuff with full FX for electric & acoustic guitar , Shure Green Bullet
520D Blues harp mic , my Roland GR33's guitar synth sounds , vocal , all with rich FX sound's
in stereo , now it's time for a larger set up and the word is , it's got to be as lightweight
as it can be for this soloist  .

The Baby Boomer's ( of which I izz ) are not going away even though I see many go daily ,
the shear volume of what's left is still a big music market to play for . This is the market
that will buy lightweight gear and as stated we are a huge market :fing2: .

Re: ¡ ¿ THD ? !

Ok, so since there's no comprehensive user manual, can someone answer a few questions for me?

1 - I'm assuming the temp light turns on if the unit gets too hot. Is this true?
2 - Does the cooling fan on the back only turn on if the unit gets too hot? Because mine doesn't run at all, but my temp light has not turned on either. The unit gets very warm though
3 - What does the O.C. light indicate? Over Current? Under what circumstances would this light come on?
