PowerStage 700 Now Shipping!

Re: ¡ ¿ THD ? !

Re: ¡ ¿ THD ? !

Ok, so since there's no comprehensive user manual, can someone answer a few questions for me?

1 - I'm assuming the temp light turns on if the unit gets too hot. Is this true?
2 - Does the cooling fan on the back only turn on if the unit gets too hot? Because mine doesn't run at all, but my temp light has not turned on either. The unit gets very warm though
3 - What does the O.C. light indicate? Over Current? Under what circumstances would this light come on?

I've never had either the temp light or the OC light turn on (at least, not that I noticed). Like you, I don't even know what the OC light is supposed to do. The fan only turns on very briefly when I power it up. I've left mine on for most of a day and while yes, it does get hot to the touch, the fan has never kicked in.

Maybe one of the SD techs will chime in. And if they do -- could you confirm once more that contrary to the dire warning in the manual, it's absolutely OK to run the unit using only the XLR outputs, with nothing plugged into the primary speaker jacks? That was stated somewhere way back in this thread (posts 23-25) but it still scares me because the statement in the Quick Start guide is pretty unequivocal that this is a no-no. Here's what it says:

"Always make sure that the channel you are sending signal to is connected to a speaker cabinet, otherwise you could damage the PowerStage 700."

I will try to get someone from SD HQ in here on Monday to answer these questions. I don't own one, and don't have access to the info needed.

Hi everyone! Got the exact same questions! My PowerStage 700 is heating quite a lot and the fan turns on only when I turn on the PS700, then it turns off and doesn't work while using the device. May be it has to turn on when the temperature is extremely hot? I wonder if it's right but after an hour of playing guitar my Powerstage 700 is hot, it's almost painful to hold my hand on it. So it would be very nice to find out - is it a normal work of the device or something's wrong :)

Re: PowerStage 700 Now Shipping!

Some info from Arwin:
By design the fan is regulated in such a way that it will start cycling when it is really needed, at super high heat, which for most players will be rarely, if at all.

If the amp were to reach a temperature that could cause any harm to the circuit or any components the fan will kick in, but otherwise the only time you’ll see it spin is when the amp is first activated.

When the unit is first activated a small amount of current engages the fan and causes it to spin momentarily, once the temperature sensing circuit comes up to voltage and stabilizes then the momentary spinning of the fan stops and for most users will not come on again during normal operation.

On that note, I should note that the PowerStage actually has multiple types of protection built in. There is overcurrent protection, overheat protection, and also a sensor that detects high levels of distortion and will roll back the signal levels accordingly. There are corresponding red LED’s that will be triggered and light up if/when any of these protection circuits are engaged.

In terms of the unit’s chassis actually getting physically hot to the touch, this is also to be expected and part of the design as well. In addition to the fan, the unit has a heat sink that helps to regulate the temperature. Because the heat sink is thermally coupled to the chassis itself the chassis will also act as a heatsink and help to dissipate the heat that the amp produces, which naturally means it will also get hot to the touch.

Hope that helps to clear up any questions and/or concerns! Let me know if there is anything else that comes up!

In terms of running the balanced outs without a load/speaker connected on the main outs, as long as you roll the volume down on the 700 you actually do not need to even hook the amp up to a speaker or loadbox. You can leave the volume rolled down on the powerstage and use the balanced outs with or without cab sim to send your signal out for silent recording, the level control and 3 band eq are not sent out to the balanced outs in this manner

Best

Excellent, everything is operating as expected. It is also good to know that the 700 has multiple types of protection -- that's reassuring. I love this thing and it's the perfect solution for my modeler amplification needs.

Spec Sheet Please

Spec Sheet Please

At this point, I'm not sure that the manufacturer even knows.

I get that feeling too -

IMHO the spec sheet comes first then the listen in my world .
It's not a unreasonable question .

Certainly not unreasonable. Though more often a question asked of a hi-fi amp. Though given it's being marketed as a pedal/modeler platform, I would think that they would have thought to mention it in the specs.

Maybe I was wrong .

¿ I thought it was a FRFR SS amp ?

All in all , this looks like a really nice amp with great potential , yeah I'm
interested .

Two of the lower powered units make/gives me ideas . Small venues would
be my target , then again I might go whole hog and get two bigger one's ,
it depends .

I was thinking on getting a powered speaker system but I want to go small
modular in size and weight ratio . Amps in self powered speaker cabs are
great , but the lifting aspect I have to always consider . I'm working on making
it easier on the loading up and down & the setting up on my ole back .

This is for my solo rig . It's getting trimmed down further than where I am now
as I learn more on incorporating IOS to the solo portable and small venue equation .

Re: PowerStage 700 Now Shipping!

If anyone buys one for their Rockman rig, it would be interesting to know. The Rockmodules and XP series have a lot in common with modern modeling systems.

Re: PowerStage 700 Now Shipping!

I wonder how these compare to regular PA amp, such as a Crown or similar. Obviously, the Crown wouldn't have a cab sim, but for use with a modeler and cab, the PA amp tends to be cheaper and more powerful. (Also, larger.)
