Our Neighbor Totoro
I've just sold my tele, now I'm down to one guitar. Well, that's not enough!
I've been craving the les paul kind of tone for a while and so I looked into my long term finances,
and got something I thought was reasonable.
I considered getting another agile. problem is that after new pickups and buying a suitable hard case...
PLUS add in the fret level and crown it may need out of the box. well suddenly an AL-3100 costs close to a G.
*Most* of the epiphone things are OK but kind of overpriced, especially the ones that come with those terrible stock pickups.
I thought about the gibson faded studios. They now have maple caps and burstbucker pros.
Still not in love with the finishes, and I'd have to do a rewire as I hate the circuit board thing they do now and I don't like being locked into 300K pots with neck buckers.
I'd also still have to buy a hard case.
Anyways I got something and, it is a Les Paul. Here's what this model has:
Non-chambered mahogany body with a maple cap...
heritage cherry sunburst...
60's style slimtaper mahogany set neck with deep-set long neck tennon...
22 frets on a rosewood board...
Kluson tulip tuners
bustbuckers #1 and #2...
and a hard case...
it's too bad the headstock looks FREAKING RETARDED!
It's the Epiphone limited edition 1960 Les Paul Standard v3. one of 1960 made.
Comes with a case with pink lining, and a numbered certificate. It's like a made in china R0.
In b4 teh Haterz... yeah I know... made in china, has a 3 piece neck, and it's wrapped in thick poly.
Frets are softer metal than gibson's. May still need some professional work to get it to play it's best. I'm well aware.
I almost went with the gibson faded but... the fadeds have some of the sound and not the look.
This Epi thing has some of both and a faster neck.
I've played these Epi 50th's and many gibson studios side by side and honestly I like this thing about as much as I like the Gibson Studio Deluxe which is $1400.
Mine was $619. So, assuming that the one that gets shipped is a good specimen, then I think I'll be quite pleased.
There's a very small element of settling for less, but really, I could NOT fork the extra 1000+ dollars for a used Gibson Traditional plus top.
And at least now I've done enough side-by-side comparisons with my own ears and hands to understand what I'm settling for.
So, as I'm finally getting a backup and compliment to my strat, I'm really looking forward to posting a real NGD with plenty of pics from my crappy digital camera.
Here's another stock photo in the mean time.
