I found Rhythm Rascal in my quest for a better drum machine program. I don't like the price of some of the ones people have recommended here; I'm sure they work great though. I also don't like using canned beats.
This one is pretty cool because it's cheap, and you can use about any WAV file drum/percussion hit. It can also change tempo within a song (unlike HotStepper - a free, similar drum machine). I've been goofing around with hacking up songs I like in order to nab drums sounds (a bass drum from a Confessor CD, a snare from Captain Beyond, etc.). You have to find a part in the song where only one of the items is hit. Often, they can be taken from intros to songs where only the drums are playing.
I let the inventor know of a weird issue with using these "nabbed" drums where there was some clicking at the end of each sample even though there was nothing there, and he claims to have worked out the bug, although I haven't tested the new version yet.
