Luca Turillia (sp) is Yngwie on crack.
The guy from Nightwish is Ok.
The guy from Children of Bodom is quite good, too bad the band sucks.
I don't listen to much Power Metal: Stratovarius, Angra, etc.
Avenged 7fold kind of sounds like these cheeseballs to me.

Don't you love how American "culture" perpetuates the "starving artist" phenomenon... If you want to play anything innovative or outside the box, prepare to live a fairly poverty-stricken existence. The general public's idea of good music is CRAP!

Maybe I should move to the Netherlands to pursue my career as a recording engineer! :13:

Lots of awesome studios putting out great sound art in Europe where it still seems like studios thrive and the art of audio engineering is sacred. I can't really say that here anymore as everyone satisfices with a DAW home hobby kit.

they never stoped. like said, they drifted away from the mainstream because of MT ****in V ... but that's more than likely a good thing.
i see mention of luca turilli .. stay away from prophet of the last eclipse, unless you are a die hard luca/rhapsody fan.
sinergy, stone (both from finland. sinergy features alexi laiho and roope latvalla, stone is roopes band before sinergy/CoB. and sinergy has a kickass 80's feel to their music) , paul gilbert never stoped shredding, then there's the whole german power metal scene...Fretology said:

OFF: And the backwards-thinking loudness war that has taken over with most recent releases has certainly helped too. Hypercompressed CDs need to go away--especially now that consumers could embrace a 24-bit format that would enable high-fidelity wide dynamic listening if they choose to (DVDaudio/SACD)...lol!
I must just be wondering why I spent $30,000 and too many years getting a bachelor's degree in Recording Arts so that I could keep the same crappy day job. Guess I'll have to really start pounding on some doors! :yell:

Not forgetting the even more obvious examples such as Pantera, Dream Theater, Megadeth .etc. They were all running around the fretboard all the way into the new millenium even if they did mellow out on some songs but people seem to choose to ignore that!

Pantera's last decent album was "Vulgar Display of Power". '91-92
Dream Theater is good. They need to get rid of James LaBrie. Too much "art" (Wank) to appeal to the masses.
Megadeth's last 3 albums have sucked. Mustaine lost his attitude.(found God).
Metallica.....Died long ago.
The great american bands are all gone. Europe doesn't quite do it as well.

One of my current favorites. :smokin:
I sometimes wish Mikael would do more ballsy singing and less death-metal growling though... I like the death metal vocals, but I like his actual voice more.

I agree.
But, with Marty Friedman and Alex Skolnick out of the picture, no one has yet stepped up to the plate to replace them. The solo is still around, especially in european bands, but is still somewhat less than it used to be.

Synyster's chops may not be up to par, and his band may sound goofy, but the kids are digging it. It's a totally different sound than the Godsmack and Nickelback slop that they are used to. Someone who plays better will start a similar band, now that there's a market for it.

I thought the riff was sorta cool, if maybe a bit "standard metal" sounding. But the solo was... hmmm. Gotta agree with with everyone else on that one. Guess I don't really see what makes this band at all unique. It's like... metal, but with an emo haircut.
