Pricing a set up and fix

So I may finally be getting my Flying V fixed. The place i'm taking it charges $40 for a Floyd set up, $20 for the tremolo arm I need, $2 for the string block i'm missing and $4 bucks a a piece for the locking nuts and caps I need.

Would you guys say this price of about $85 dollars after strings and other things, is a good price for all of this?

Place near me charges $40-50 for a basic setup on a basic guitar so $85 doesn’t sound excessive given the Floyd and parts.

Thanks, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to get ripped off or something. Normally I try to set my own guitars up but I am horrible with a floyd rose.

I charge a € 45,00 hourly fee, two hours minimum, for any setup job.

But if the job is an easy one, so wait while I'm doin't it, and takes less than 30min, then I charge € 25,00.

Just make sure they set the intonation decent, a lot of tech dudes around me will work them up and won't set the intonation b/c they don't like to mess with a floyd more than they have to. Seems like a fair price otherwise.

If the intonation is not correct, then it is not really a set up.

My question is what are you get getting for $40? Setting up a floyd from scratch correctly will take a solid hour plus, so you might want to make sure the two of you are on the same page.

My local shop charges $65 for a Floyd setup, but they go through the guitar 100%

Define “100%”

Too many variables involved. Will a Suhr need as much attention as a MIM strat out of the box? Is the nut centered and shimmed to the right height? Are the springs the correct tension for the desired tuning and string gauge?

If this is an older floyd, do the saddles or slots need attention? Are the saddles missing block shims? Are the blocks cracked?

That is why I am saying you have to ask what any shop implies when they throw out “set up”

It was $40 for a clean and polish, They set the floyd level, made sure the intonation was good. Replaced one of the screws that holds the saddle in and locks the strings. The only problem with the whole thing was that I needed new locking caps and screws. The ones that will fit this guitar are apparently proprietary and they could not fin any that would fit.

The only other option he had was to install a new nut but he did not want to screw new holes into the guitar to make it fit.

So I have a floyd that does not lock right now.

Could you contact the manufacturer and get the right parts you need?

I;ve tried but I cannot find the company that makes it. I think they went under soon after the purchase. The brand is Sky.

Can you post a pic of the lock nut? May be able to find something that will work.

I guess what I mean it they check all the things you listed...but for instance, if there is an issue with the nut and it needed to be fixed or replaced, you would have to pay extra for that.
If they performed a setup and couldn’t get something right they will find the issue, call me and give me my options.
I always go to the same tech in this particular shop. I’m anal about certain things and he always accommodates. This shop keeps all of the setup notes on file in their computer. They have all 9 of my guitars documented with the adjustment measurements etc.

Sounds like a good place. Once you have a baseline, you know what to look for the next time and what will save you time.
