PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

Re: PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

I have a gmajor fx unit. Couldnt I just use that in the same way the lo-fi pedal works by thinning the eq settings?

Probably. I've never used the Lo-Fi, so I don't know if it adds distortion/fuzz or not.

Re: PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

The Lo-Fi is a lot of fun to use as an overdrive. Slipknot, Shinedown, and I use it this way. But the G Major is such a soncially massive unit that you should be able to squeeze out the tones you are looking for from it. Mixing overdrive and EQ should be able to get you what you need.

Re: PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

I have a few tinny sounding presets for an AM radio effect on the gmajor. I was wondering if the rat pedal in the link I posted was the older model with the good chip. Any thoughts? Is it worth $50? I already have a rat pedal I just bought but it looks alot different than the one I could buy locally for $50

Re: PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

Is this a rat or rat2?
I just recieved the lm308 chip but read that this rat below may have different circuitry than the original (if it is truly the rat2)?

Is this one better than the one above?

The top one is a Rat 2, the bottom one is a Vintage Rat RI. The first ones were in big boxes like that also.

With the right chip they should be pretty equal, I like the smaller box one, mostly to save room on my board. There are some minor changes in circuitry through the years, not sure if there is a clean line to when the changes happend, i.e. don't know if all 2s were exactly the same. But, the changes weren't that drastic, the majority of the tone is from the 308 chip and the diodes.

Hope that helps,
Roger

Re: PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

Thanks. I wonder if anyone else may know what circuitry changes were made aside from the chip?

Re: PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

I had a Rat2 with the LM308 chip stock.

If you want to know what's inside open it up... it's written right on the chip.

Re: PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

It has a Texas instruments chip. I just recieved the lm308 chip. I will be putting it in tonight. I was just wondering what other circuitry changes were made as a link from another member on this thread shows that the circuitry has been changed aside from the lm308 chip.

Re: PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

I had the schematics around here somewhere, but I can't find them right now. IIRC, some versions had a FET as an input buffer before the opamp and some versions didn't. But, the majority of the sound is coming from the opamp and type of diodes that are used. All the Rats (Turbo, Dirty, and plain Rat) are basically the same circuit with different diodes. The Turbo uses LEDs for more output and less compression, the Rat uses regular silicon 1N914s, and the Dirty Rat uses Germanium diodes for maximum distortion and compression.

Does that help?

Re: PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

i've had a chip socket installed on one of my vintage pedals (MXR Dist+ 1979) after i acidentally fried the original one by reversing polarity with an adapter i was using.

the chip is a 741 opamp chip. the replacement chip is also a 741 (from the mid 70's i was told), but the manufacturer of the chip is different. The guy who repaired my pedal said installing the socket was a good idea because it would allow him to try out several different chips and pick the best one.

now my question(s) to you guys is this...
1. does the socket affect the tone/distortion at all? lets say i DIDNT fry the original chip, took it out, put the socket in, put back the original chip, would there be ANY noticable difference?
2. does installing a socket and replacing the chip for a similar vintage chip decrease the value of a vintage pedal? if so, by how much (% wise?)

thanks, sorry for hijacking... but im about the check out some RATs on ebay now due to this thread, so its sorta related :)

Re: PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

I just replaced the original Texas instruments chip with the lm308. Seems to have less gain but clearer toneHave any of you found the knobs need to be adjusted to get a similar tone after replacing the chip? Has anyone been unhappy after replacing the chip? Is the Keely mod add bells and whistles that rob tone? Thanks

If you want the tone of the pedal to be more agressiv and edgier, you coudl try replacing the drive potentiometer with a larger one, and/or replace the diodes with somethign like red LEDs.

Re: PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

Any thoughts on this Vodkamods mod compared to the Keeley mod?

-NOW INCLUDES SOCKETED NE5534AP CHIP...BETTER THAN LM308

Ever heard the lore behind Rasputin's mojo? He was more than just an influential 19th century monk. That evil SOB had some serious freakin' power. Our RATsputin mod captures that evil flavor in pure PROCO style. Heavy, authoritative tone. Thick & full of mojo. The RATsputin mod by Vodka Mods is the premier stack-tone distortion available anywhere!

Many guitarists don't realize the newer RAT pedals aren't the same as the early models on which it's great reputation was built. Yeah, the ones with piercing harmonics and a thickness that penetrated. We use a recipe that revives some of that old school girth.

This mod brings the pedal back closer to the older, tighter RAT sound. Bass response is increased, giving this pedal some seriously tight low end. Mids are boosted a bit, b/c we know players using the RAT are soloing in LOUD and raw situations. And the counter-intuitive filter now is made more versatile to give you a wider range of usable tones. If you dare open this rodent up, you might even find a stray LED making it's home inside...As always, high fidelity caps and diodes only. Take a listen...
