Pro set up

How much difference does a pro set up make?? Local luthier wants $120 to do it. Said he guarantees Ill be blown away. I can set my action, intonation and pickup height and stuff, but cant level frets and all.. I lowered my LP action where I want it and it made connection with one of the highest frets so I had to raise it.
Just dont wanna pay that if it isnt really worth it... Never had a pro setup before....

Re: Pro set up

The first time I took my tele in for a setup-the LGS said it was fine. Another opinion a few months later tweaked the intonation a bit and that was that.

I think a good fretjob would be worth it if they need some TLC. If your frets are ok, I'd leave it alone. If your frets need some TLC take a shot on it. But it sounds to me that you have your LP where you want it.

I remember when Lee_M. got his LP back from Dan Erlewine and he was KO'd by the results. Although it was expensive, I can't remember the cost, but Mr. Erlewine basically overhauled that thing front to back.

Re: Pro set up

For a setup, $120 is waaay outta whack. If it's a fret level, it's a pretty fair price.

NO ****! I can get an amazing set up here for $50.00! For $120.00 I can get a set op, get the frets leveled and get lunch while I wait!

Re: Pro set up

A fret level is a great investment if it is needed. For A setup and a fret level $120 is reasonable. In my opinion, the vast majority of axes out there could use a leveling. It really makes a difference and makes the setup perfect!!! When I am talking to a customer that is going to get a setup, I always mention that the guitar may need a leveling before I quote a price and access the guitar. If you do a setup and the frets are not level, it will not be a good setup at all and it might go against my reputation.

Re: Pro set up

I just dropped a guitar off here in CT for 60 bucks, and I'm getting a set-up, new strings, new tuners on both my E strings, and a deeper route in the control cavity of my strat.

Re: Pro set up

$120 is alot for a pro setup IMO. For $65 I had got a setup including fret leveling and such, a graghite nut, and strings.
