Problem with my g string!

I really do not understand what the deal is. No matter what I try the g string sounds sour. I have tried changing the strings different tuning methods and even had a local guitar shop do a full baseline set-up in case some thing of that nature was off. No luck. I have been kind of dealing with it for the past few months but it is to the point where I can barely stand it now. Does anyone know what is going on?

I got this exact same problem with my tele. I'm going to try one of the vintage style bridges and if that doesn't fix it I'll get a wound G.

wound g is the best cure for a bad sounding g string. it will improve the tone greatly.

What gauge? What kind of action? Neck pup clearance? Saddle firmly seated? String tree? Bridge pup clearance? All amps - same problem?

Like some of the others asked, what is the guitar, what strings and gauges, what set up do you like.... ???? more info needed.....

I've had a few weird things happen on a few guitars that made the G string sound funny and off.... one was a bad tuner rattleing with the G, C and A notes... The other was the G string ringing out above the nut when i strummed..... Also i had a Jackson with a lock nut and one string sounded like a sitar sometimes... Turned out the way the headstock angled the string shrap to oneside caused the lock nut to clamp it funny...

Many more examples i could give...... but tell us your complete story and the gear in question in detail......

Thanks for the advice guys. The next time I buy strings I will give the wound g string a try. My guitar isn't amazing or anything. Just a cheapo Hamer Slammer. But, it isn't really that bad of a guitar overall. Just that one thing. I actually thought about a new nut too. I saw them in the latest Stewmac mag. I would have to figure out the string spread, first, though. I also have a 30 watt practice amp of an older marshall model.....probably like 5 years or so. That is all I got. Not much. Just what a po boy from Spokane can afford (at the moment:naughty: ) My next buy will hopefully be a decent acoustic. Then maybe after that I will upgrade my electric and amp. Thanks again and any more advice is welcome. P.S. right now I have the pink ernie balls on my guit-fiddle (Which I am not pleased with them anymore) I also use your basic korg chromatic tuner.

it's Jerry Donahue's tip for a three-saddle tele, but you can adapt it to your Hamer.

Thnx Omboy! That was really informative and interesting. That would explain why I have gotten it to sound beautiful before by simply tuning it all by ear without my tuner! Sheesh, I need to learn to trust my ear more. Thanks alot!
