Project H-H PUPS for a Mahogany guitar

Hi, I have a project, for a new guitar. I look a Cort M600 (Mahogany body and neck, Rosewood fretboard wood) and I like it.

My question is which pickups put in the guitar? I prefer Duncan pickups and I like Pearly Gates and Alnico II Pro. I play classic rock and blues (ZZ Top, Dire Straits, Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan.) the heaviest stuff that I play is AC/DC.

I read that Pearly Gates pickups is very sensible at the tone control and the cort M600 have only one.

What's the best combination: Pearly Gates Bridge and Neck, Pearly Gates Bridge + AIIP Neck, AIIP Neck and Bridge?

I accept other suggestions too!

Thanks

Other pickups that would work are the Duncan Custom bridge and 59 neck.

I've yet to try a PG, but I would go for the A2Pros myself, I like them best of the Duncan line for lower gain uses.
The 59 is great too, really nice lead tone in particular.

Thanks man, but the Duncan Custom is high output pickup? I like vintage tones.

And what you have to say about the PG's and the AIIP?

I like my AIIP neck that I have in other guitar, but it is a good combination for Pearly Gates Bridge? I heard that the PG is very sensible in tone control and I want know if the combination PG Bridge + AIIP Neck is good?

With AIIP in my guitar, I have a JB SH-4 in Bridge but it's very agressive, not good for me.

Re: Project H-H PUPS for a Mahogany guitar

I've had a Pearly gates set in an all mahogany PRS Santana SE. They sound great, and I think the bright top end of the PG is perfect for warm guitars like that. The PG bridge can growl and scream. The PG neck is VERY warm and round in that guitar, don't know if thats what you're after.

I have a 59 set and a Seth Lover set in different all mahogany PRS guitars and those are great too, but lower output.

The PG is so much agressive or is a good set for blues rock and classic rock?

Re: Project H-H PUPS for a Mahogany guitar

No, I don't mean to say that the Pearly Gates set is extremely aggressive or high output. It is perfect for classic rock and blues. It is bumped up a tiny bit compared to a 59 or seth, but its more of an EQ thing than an output thing. I still consider it pretty vintage output.

Oh, I understand now, sorry.

Do you recommend a set with PG or a combination with PG Bridge and AIIP Neck?

If you know, the PG set also is good with cedar guitars?

Re: Project H-H PUPS for a Mahogany guitar

Wish I could answer that. I've never played the A2Pro neck or a guitar made from cedar. The PGn seems to be a forum favorite though, and it is one of mine.

Re: Project H-H PUPS for a Mahogany guitar

For me the Set Lovers is impracticable, I'm Brasilian and here the Set Lovers are so much expensive. Each pickup in the cheapest shop cost R$500 (Aprox $300).

Someone more have a suggestion or something for say about the Pearly Gates?

Re: Project H-H PUPS for a Mahogany guitar

If you're in Brazil, aren't the PGs more expensive as well? You might be as well just buying whatever Duncans you can find at a good price. I'd guess that'd be JBs and 59s.

Re: Project H-H PUPS for a Mahogany guitar

I have Pearly Gates in the neck of my LP. At first it seemed a little bright in my guitar (mahogany with maple cap), but picking a better bridge PU (a P-90) redoing the EQ on my amp made it sound wonderful.

Since your guitar is all mahogany, you won't have any issues with it being too bright, especially since you already have your setup EQed for your A2P. The PG will go together with your A2P beautifully.

The PG is a really great PU for classic rock like the stuff you listed. Billy Gibbons = PG.

Can't go wrong with the PG. In fact...can't do much better than a PG, imo.

Re: Project H-H PUPS for a Mahogany guitar

Diocletian, the difference of the PG and the JB/59 isn't too big, R$50. But the difference for Seth Lovers is R$200 each, much more.

GuitarDoc, do you recommend a set with PG Bridge + AIIP Neck? Not the PG set?

Thanks!

Re: Project H-H PUPS for a Mahogany guitar

i have an all mahogany body H-H guitar and very much like the Alnico II Pro neck and JB bridge ... wide range of very useful tones both dirty and under varying degrees of gain ... they work well together if you can arrange a 5-way P type megaswitch
good luck

You pretty much answered your own questions. Pearly gates set.

I'm ASSUMING this guitar is a tad on the dark/warm side. PG's

Re: Project H-H PUPS for a Mahogany guitar

Thanks tone4days, how I say, I think the JB is a little bit agressive.

Aceman, I can't understand all with a perfect intrepretation, my english is regular. The Cort M600 will be a little bit dark even with the PG set?

Re: Project H-H PUPS for a Mahogany guitar

Get PGs, it's clearly what you want so you might as well get them.

Re: Project H-H PUPS for a Mahogany guitar

Diocletian, thanks. The last ask, in the Duncan's site, is recommended the PG's for alder/maple body and maple/ebony fretwoods. I understand that in that specifications the pickup will be very bright. In the Mahogany guitar, with rosewood fretboard, they will be bright but not much, right?
