PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

By the way, that “feeling” isn’t going to be universal for all Silver Sky or Eric Johnson guitars, those were special. Might want to pick this one up if it’s giving you that feeling.

Nice!
The only thing that matters is if you are happy with it. And if after 29 days you decide that you're not...

Strange that it would matter if there was controversy or not...if you really like it, and have the money...how does it matter? Just wondering, as I really don't know what difference it made if someone else doesn't like your decision.

Yea, that’s why I bought it and to see. I’m enjoying it. Never thought I’d purchase a PRS or a Mayer signature guitar, nothing against him just wasn’t on my radar.

Exactly, it was a no brainer especially during this lockdown.

I was just trolling. I respect the members here on these boards, I’ve bought and sold stuff and gotten valuable information in the past. Just having a bit of fun.
Like I said above, if someone told me a week ago I’d drop this much on a guitar, that’s a PRS and a Mayer sig I’d say they’re nuts. Yet here I am, without any regrets and absolutely loving the guitar. I too at first thought it was weird seeing that headstock on a Strat body, but seeing it in person, playing it etc it doesn’t feel out of place at all.
I think peoples issues is they expect a traditional Strat, which this is not. Yet it sounds and feels (neck) like one. And I have to say the output jack, knobs and the wider pickup selector tip is genius. The neck pickup is my favorite.

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

usa prs guitars are one of the few thatd id purchase sight unseen. they are so damn consistent. doesnt mean if you had 20 to choose from you might not have a favorite, but more so than any other brand i find them very consistent

I appreciate when one admits to trolling
its what I had suspected

Respect man

Same for me but with the old Mayer signature Fender Strat. It’s the ultimate blues Strat for me, basically a hot rodded ‘62RI with a great neck profile and pickups that work great for me. I also like the fact that the signature is on the back of the headstock, so it just looks like a Strat, unlike most other signature models.

Too bad they ruined it by forgetting to put in the neck pickup. :P

It does look awesome but I gotta say the quality on the PRS is way above it. The Kramer has that old school vibe, I’m not saying you gotta fight it but the PRS plays with much less effort and is setup way better. With a Floyd nut and bridge you’re a bit more limited on perfect setup options where as the Silver Sky, with a bone nut, classic saddles, double action truss rod and locking tuners you can dial it right in and be locked in tuning wise as well.

The Kramer does one thing but does it amazingly well. I’ve had 10’s on it, tuned it to standard and Eb and it plays and sounds the best with 9’s in Eb tuning. The Silver Sky has so many great tones and sounds amazing clean. With gain it’s got that classic rock, blues thing down right. Complement each other well.

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

FWIW, I think the silver sky looks like a pretty decent strat. The birds on the fretboard are pretty *****in' too.

Beside the neck and the pickups and how well it’s put together, another thing that has pleased me a ton is how ready out of the box it was. According to the PRS tag it’s dated Jan 20, 2020. So the guitar shipped here to Canada from Maryland in the winter, hung on the store wall for a month (they received it March 12) with the store being closed for 3 of those 4 weeks. I bring it home, and plug it in. 2 strings were of by a few cents according to my tuner. I checked the neck relief and it’s perfect. Intonation bang on, action was great. Frets perfect, no buzzing and fret ends beautifully made all around. Rosewood board nice and dark and conditioned.
Only thing I’ve done was lower the middle pickup and later on might lower the action as I like it a tad lower personally but that’s normal stuff.

Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised cause this is the most expensive guitar I’ve ever bought, but yea definitely a big :bigok: with everything.

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

Yeah, if there's one thing they do right it's that PRS stuff is very consistent. At least what I've played. Even their SE line is pretty good for that.

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

I never understood the draw of buying a PRS with a pickguard. PRS guitars have great build quality, but they are known for their tops and the beauty of their guitars. If I want a guitar with a pickguard there are literally MILLIONS of boring, basic options available (used, new, stock, or custom made). I would buy a PRS with single coils, but I wouldn't buy one with plastic on the top of the guitar.

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

I don't think the pickguard-based PRS's do it for me (except the Silver Sky). The other ones would look a lot better without pickguards.

You know; I wasn't a fan of the Silver Sky when PRS first introduced it as a John Mayer Signature but I actually like the look with the PRS headstock - it looks quite natural to me now. Sounds like a great player and pretty pain-free in set up/maintenance the way you described it. Congrats on the acquisition!

I understand what you mean but they’ve done that in the past with the Mira and Starla.
